changing coolant hoses writeup
« on: August 11, 2008, 08:03:27 PM »
So I started this today and took pics along the way.  As far as the parts # for the hoses your better off looking here http://bmwfans.info/original/E30/2-T/318is-M42/USA/L/M/1991/04/mg-11/ill-11_1272/
http://bmwfans.info/original/E30/2-T/318is-M42/USA/L/M/1991/04/mg-11/ill-11_1154/

Special tools?
I didn't have a 11 mm deep socket for the intake manifold

Other related parts?
throttle assembly gasket (2x)

Unplug, undo clamps that hold airbox to throttle housing

Air hose that attaches to bottom of rubber boot

Just taking note of where all the hoses go

Take off the throttle cable.  You need to be careful since the rubber is hard and brittle.

Air hose

Theres a C shaped bracket under the opening of the throttle assembly that needs to be unbolted to access the 4 nuts that attach the throttle assembly to the intake manifold

Undo the 4 nuts that hold the throttle body housing to the intake manifold.  you need a 10 mm long socket.

Need to replace the 2 throttle body gaskets

air hose goes

Once you undo the coolant hoses on throttle warmer?  Get ready for more coolant flow from the drain plug

Now remove the intake manifold.  They are held in place by 11mm nuts!  So you need a long 11mm socket.  Also there is a bracket on each end of the intake manifold that holds it inplace.  Sorry no pics
Also this bracket

After the intake manifold is out, you need to take out the lower portion of the manifold.  there are 5 nuts.  Here I already loosened it and moved it out of the way.

Now the coast is clear to reach all the cooling pipes

just found out today that the cooling pipe attached the engine block is fucked.

all the connection were brittle and cracked.  I did not order this part so its gonna set me back a couple days.

Ok so got some new parts today!

water pipe

Idle control valve hose

weird air hose

Nice pictorial writeup... what is that white/blue L connector you have on your vacuum line?  That line goes to the booster???

I made the same mistake. Pulled the plastic coolant junction out and most of the plastic stayed inside my old coolant hoses. Great pics!!

Thanks I'll keep updating when my parts arrive.  Also, after this I'll think about tackling the timing chain with a writeup also.

You mean this one?  I don't know.  The clamps look original so I don't think its ever been messed with.

^It's clearish plastic on mine... It's blue/white on a different m42 e30 I looked at the other day so I was wondering.  I'm trying to look at everything possible to find the cause of my start idle problems.

My idle was a bit irratic when I was stopped at a traffic light.  Most of my air hoses were cracked and loose fitting so I replaced them.  I guess I'll find out if I fixed the problem once I get a chance to start the car.

Finished it hoses up today.

hooked up one end.  I'm pointing to the same hose here.

Hooked up one end of that u pipe with the 50 hose fittings!
Sorry didn't take a pic of the middle attachment of the waterpipe.  It goes to the radiator around the drain plug.

new lower intake gasket

Connected this hose from the edge of the engine block to the bottom pipe on the firewall

Already showed you where this hose comes from.

Now mount your lower intake manifold.

pull these two pipes out the opening.

just showing where the hell this hose is coming from

this is what the mess of hoses should look like

got a new air hose under the intake boot.

Mount your intake manifold and reattach this bracket

attach your ICV and attach the longer air hose to

the U shaped hose.

connect ICV wire

tighten bracket
Mount your throttle assembly.  Sorry no pics.  Dont forget to reconnect the water hoses to the throttle warmer (?) or whatever that part is called.

remember that C shaped bracket on the lower half of the throttle assembly?  well its there to hold the lower half of the throttle warmer to the throttle assembly.

then reconnect this bitch of a air hose.

Then the throttle cable.  I might have missed a connection or two in the reassembly...refer to my dissassembly pics.  BTW anyone know the part # for these two parts?  Both were crusty and brittle and are falling apart.  Thanks.

Nice write up but this is all incredibly pointless and expensive when you can bypass the mass of hoses with a single 9" piece of coolant hose. Mine just passed visual inspection part of smog check in California without any of this stuff. The tech said they don't care as long as nothing is leaking and all the emissions components are in place and functional.

Its a one way valve to maintain vacuum in the brake booster in case the engine shuts down.
Maybe this is a good time to clean out your throttle body.

good luck

If you're referring to the grommet where the cable passes through the bracket..

Grommet
Part number: 35 41 1 152 744

The clip where the cable attaches to the TB actuator arm (?), I'm still searching for..  I needed both pieces, myself ;)
