got a 318is with 120k miles on it for 460$$$, yup.... less than 500 bucks!!!

why did it cost so little? the motor was over heating, and the previous owner did not want to spend any money on the car, they just wanted to get rid of it and recover what money they could....

this is a popular thread with all the m42 guys. "the mess under the intake" well, the hoses in my car was just as bad as the pictures in this thread, so ALL the rubber hoses in the engine are being replaced...... actually every rubber piece on the car is going to be replaced......

i would NEVER have imagined that the interior of this car would look like THAT....

but not all the interior is perfect...

the dash has 3 large cracks in it... already have a new one on the way... and have a few auctions on ebay I'm watching for the switches and the OBC....

And what did the engine bay look like you ask?

Now the fun begins....

and the transmission???

yup it got cleaned also!

all the drive train in its temporary home..

and now the engine bay is pretty clean now that everything is accessible!!

And, now that everything is out of the car, for 19 year old parts, there was only 1 casualty...

this is the aux fan temp switch that goes into the radiator on the passengers side. I am currently trying to find a replacement for the connectors, and not having much luck... does anyone have any advice??? i would REALLY appreciate it....

the motor is waiting for all the gaskets to arrive, EVERY gasket in the motor with the exception of the head gasket is being replaced, we ordered a new head gasket, but it seems like everything with the head gasket is fine, and don't really want to take the head off when everything seems ok, and it doesn't seem like doing a head gasket on this car would be that hard with the motor in the car incase it does need to be done at a later date, the thermostat and water pump will also be replaced while were at it.

the clutch, will be a stock sachs and the flywheel I'm planning on is the JB racing flywheel from bimmerworld... 9lbs... stainless steel clutch line from UUC..

suspension.....
from the surfing that i have done AKG seems popular.. so the car is receiving all polly bushings from AKG, with the exception of rear trailing arm bushings, those will be stock rubber....

The suspension, control arms/tie rods ect are also on the way....

for the rest of the suspension, turner motorsport will be the source of the shocks/struts/springs and possible sway bars..

I'm thinking about Team dynamic's wheels that Bimmerworld has.... 13# each....

Does anyone have any ideas, or something that i have over looked?

First of all great find...The interior alone is worth 500...
The only thing a little odd is that it has bottlecaps...Thought all is's came with weaves...I could be wrong..
And I know it is a little more of expense, but now would be a great time to do a Z3 steering rack swap...So easy when the engine is out..Just did one on mine and you would not believe how much better it handles...go-kart on steroids....lol

That's an awesome find. The only one that's turned up around here has serious frame rust and torn seats. I missed one for $650 a little while ago, also had some tears in the seats.

I found this for the connector & pigtails...Shogun is a legend for his 7-series stuff.

a pair of these

sachs clutch kit from bav

also ordered new front end grills, and hood cowl grills. Also got tie rods.

called autosolutions, ordered a ultimate shift kit, but he has to manufacture one for me, and that will not be done until the 3rd.... so the drive train might be complete minus the shifter this weekend, depending on how the motor tear down, reassembly goes.

so theres a cool 1300$+, but closer to completion so its all good....

Not that one..Nothing M3 style or the 3.0l Z3...They both use a "variable" rack where the non-M Z3 uses a "linear" rack...

any modifying to get it to connect up to the stock searing column? or is it pretty much just "plug and play?"

Thanks, ill keep an eye out for another from them.

Also i just ordered new tie rods today, do you know if the 318is tie rods will work with this rack, or do i need to buy different new tie rods if i go this route?

Pretty much just a couple of spacers needed for our cars..The steering linkage DOES NOT need modified...Our airbag cars have an adjustable steering column. You still may need to dremel out the plate and/or firewall..Once again---Easier with engine out..
And you don't need all the parts listed...The original OP decided to replace a lot of the older components with new ones..

Any troubleshooting for why its been overheating?

Looks like most of the oil is coming from the valve cover and timing covers. My personal favorite that I've witnessed people getting rid of the car for is the oil filter housing o-ring. It's like a $1 part and leaks like a sieve cause it's under pressure.

As for the fan switch I just used one from an earlier model with blade connectors. I've wired in a high speed spal 13" fan to the high speed circuit. It turns on at lower temp, and removed both factory fans.

A note on turner for suspension. I advise to check the struts as they are rebuilt bilsteins. You'll note the welding bead around the top isn't precise. I've had a couple bad experiences so starting buying new with bimmerparts.com.

parts started arriving earlier this week..!!!

some of which were the poly bushings from AKG, and the lightweight flywheel from Bimmerworld!..

now the fun with the motor begins...

I ordered new chain guides, and come to find out, the ones in the motor are still in pretty good condition, but 19 year old plastic..... i think i would rather have new guides in there for the cost, and the Very little extra work at this point.

original spark plugs?

my money is on yes....

cams looked good...

pistons, no holes, and everything still has a nice fit. No scoring on the cylinder walls.

no bent valves...

so, we are not going to be replacing any valves, or pistons. Just gaskets.. we will be cleaning everything up though.

took about an hour to break down the motor, now all the back order stuff needs to arrive, so that we can start putting everything back together.

it was over heating because of a coolant hose going into the head was jacked.... actually ALL the hoses were decaying, cracking ect.... the water pump and thermostat were original, but seemed to be in good working order... they are still getting replaced though.

actually the valve cover gasket was in really good condition.... go figure. the oil was leaking from one of the gaskets in the timing case. As best my buddy could figure out, during the tear down.

people with little to no mechanical ability, do not want to deal with it, they just want it to work.. very few people would see a 460$ car, that was over heating as a possible Great deal....

I recommend you to replace hydraulic lifters with new from VW. Imho marks on cams show that they are not perfect.

P.S. do not forget about sump bolts.
