Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / M42 with M47 Crank
« on: January 16, 2009, 08:53:02 PM »
Btw, take note that you will need to modify the crank (shorten the nose a little and additional notch for the woodruff key).

Also, you will have to deck the pistons.

Nope, I don't think their is any off the shelf manifold. You will have to custom build it

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Possible to install Turbo for RHD 318is?
« on: December 29, 2008, 09:52:50 PM »
Anyone managed to install a Turbo into a RHD 318is? The problem is that steering column is in the way and I am not sure if it is possible to custome a down pipe to get around the steering column.

Thanks!

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Crankshaft?

Yup, crank from M47 engine only. The M47N has a shorter nose and will require and additional adapter.

Merry Xmas!
unfortunatly the budget is low i am a young student.
as nice as a valve salad sounds.. not quite what im after,
but basically to reliably do it i need solid lifters a new water and oil pump, and a nicely lightened and balanced bottom end. what bmw motors come out with solid lifters m50...
what is the advantage of H-beam rods?
MAf conversion? i am going to keep stock ecu but chip it and yes hopefully get the cams reground also, will i notica an increase in power or throttle response with a MAF conversion?
$1000 ouch...

Only the Euro S50 motors come with solid lifters. US S50 and all M50/52 uses hydro lifters.

For H-beam forged rods, they are lighter than stock. Check out eagle rods for some of the finest rods out there.

regarding MAF conversion, it is not possible with stock ECU. You will need at least a piggyback ECU to work with MAF. But from what I have read, its not really worth spending the money just for MAF, our "barn door" sensor is not that restrictive by nature and you will hardly get any improvement.

I too have been contemplating for a 8K RPM motor. But after some research and asking, its not worth the effort and it cost too much. Power gains will be minimal as well compared to going turbo/SC.

Seriously, if you are after power gains for your M42 at minimal cost, a turbo is the best option. Else its rebuild and go for M47 crank and custom pistons.

Wow thats great rob! and at the wheels to that most be a quick machine! how did you get to 1.95ltrs have you used the standard M42 crank or swopped it for an M47 one? Ive just bought a rover one from the 2ltr 75 car which uses the sane crank or so info on here suggests, it was only £75 so if it doesnt fit its not the end of the world.

If you have swopped to th M47 have you kept the rods the standard length and just fitted lower comp custom pistons? this is what i'd like to do if its possible, although i do have some forged H  beam conrods to go in.

What Cr are you running people have been advising me to run around 9:1cr so its still got low down torque.

Cheers Matt, thanks for you input, nice to talk to some one whos done it and i willing to share information.

I have talk to a couple of mechanics and they too recommend 9:1 for decent low end torque and good boost capability.

I think 8K RPM is going to be tough for hydro lifters. Even MM's motor is limited to 7700 RPM with hydro lifters. You will also need to replace the springs with stronger as valve float is likely to occur with stock springs.

MetricMechanic to sell solid lifters for M42s but the price is......hoho.....you can buy an engine with that amt and still have savings left.

Btw, you will need to replace your cams if you are revving to 8K RPM. The stock cams are optimised for low RPM and they become a restriction instead.

Is there a difference when compared M40B18 (European 318I) rod lenght to M42B18 (318IS) to each other? Is that M40 rod lenght you mentioned 316I M40 rod lenght or 318I M40 one?

Here is a great thread about the rod lengths.

If you are going for 200HP, recommend you stroke + bore up the engine. Use the M47 diesel crankshaft and 86mm pistons.

Engine + Driveline / whats the best gear oil for transmission
« on: December 10, 2008, 07:07:22 PM »
I am using Amsoil right now. Also tried Torco before. Both IMHO are better than Redline. Also tried Mobil gear oil. Its good as well. My transmission does not have an ATF label thus I am using 75W90 gear oil right now.

Engine + Driveline / Cams Worn Out Prematurely or Normal?
« on: December 10, 2008, 03:11:44 AM »
I recently removed the oil cap to top up some engine oil and saw that the pointed end of the cam lobe is shiny. Its as if it has been polished or sand. The rest of the lobe look OK with machine marks though.

I do understand that the pointed end comes into contact with the lifters. I am wonder if this will cause the contact areas to become "shiny" and looked polished? Or is it a result of premature cam wear?

Thanks!

Engine + Driveline / Cams worth it?
« on: December 10, 2008, 02:43:59 AM »
I don't think its really necessary to spend the money on schrick cams thought it would be good to have. My e36 cam with schrick cams (from previous owner). The car definitely is lively at high RPM (3K and above) but low end feels dead. Was told its due to the cams. It shifts the power band upwards.

Considering the cams cost around USD1K or more, I think you are better off investing in a DASC etc...
