Author Topic: Info needed for buildup M42/M44 (Read 12525 times)

My engine (M42B18) is in need of some new gaskets etc. so I was planning on doing a complete engine-job.
I have the option to buy a pair of rallycams (Catcams) which are at the max to suit hydraulic lifters. Before fitting I would like some headwork to be done.

The mechanic who works on my car has a lot of racingstuff in store. He has a M44 1.9 (fully balanced, lightweight pistons) with a prepped M42 head (with some wild cams) on top with Jenvey ITB's and Alpha-N. It is rated at 200 hp so that is more or less my goal.

I was wondering if I should stick with the M42 block or swap it for the M44 or go with a bigger displacement. And if so, how can I achieve that + does it have a negative effect on running high rev's being a stroker ?

Their engine's are nice, and well built to live another 200,000 miles!

If you are going for 200HP, recommend you stroke + bore up the engine. Use the M47 diesel crankshaft and 86mm pistons.

it can be much less if you are willing to seek a machine shop of your own & just by internals from them... I almost went that route - but ultimatelly figured F-it - & let them put the whole thing together.

They have done it more than once, suggesting it could go smoother

Thanks guys. Already knew the MM-boys. Just a pity they are on the other end of the ocean

I came across a German site with strokerkits for the 316i,318i and 318is. The 318is was 2042 cc so that must be the M47 crank with pistons swap. They didn't mention anything of headwork being done but they rate their engine at 174 hp. Is that realistic ? Upping the displacement with 250 cc and gaining an extra 34 horses (might be incl. adjusted chip)?

When I have a look at the 50 horsepower gain Dbilas claims with their setup of headwork, cams, ITB's and Alpha-N on the stock M42B18 how does that work with a bigger displacement ? What can I expect from stroking the engine and combining that with the full Dbilas-setup ? And does the stroked bottom-end still likes to be revved beyond 7k rpm's ?

A friend of mine has the M40B16 stroked to 1.8 with the M43B18 bottom-end. He has got the full Dbilas setup and went up from 92 hp stock to 155 hp.

not really sure what the Dbilas set up is - but I sure would like to see the link with the german stroker motors.

if it makes you feel better - MM also suggests their stroker output to about 175hp - so I'm sure there is some truth to it - considering it is a similar concept.

You bet it does.... Belive me, my stroked M42 revs very well af 2068 ccm with the M47 crankshaft. Been driving it for more than a year now.

Thanks for your reply Lund. What's your guess, if 50 horsepower is gained like Dbilas claims with stock displacement, is 210-220 hp with 2042 cc a realistic figure ?

I am pretty sure it is not easy to get past 200 horsepower, but a lot would depend on what kind of ECU you choose, and if you ever get such power I doubt it would be a everyday driving car like mine.
Ceotto from this forum is building a very similar engine, but with special made cams, solid lifters and ITB�s. But I think he still need a lot of work before starting it.

hey guys..interesting thread! i am currently in this engine-building thing too.. and we dont have any idea how much hp we will have at the end.. but +/- 7500-8000rpm and 170-190hp with:

stock block (bored, honed etc) with stock displacement
balanced crank
balanced and lightened flywheel
custom mahle pistons
custom h-rods (bmw-motorsport?)
fully ported and machined head
polished and machined valves
cutted valveguides
custom exhaust manifold
stock intake
wild cams
solid lifters
new programmed ecu
and the cr about +11:1 we will see...

and for the racing engine the same.. except the m47 crank and dbilas itb's... guess around +230hp but i dont think you can drive that on the street...
