Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Re: E30 M44??
« on: November 24, 2013, 08:04:33 AM »
Has anyone yanked out the std M42 system in the E30 and replaced it with an E36 M42 system or an E36 M44 system?  What is the good, the bad and the ugly of doing it?

For that matter, has anyone ever fed an M44 from an e36 with an M42 harness/ecu?

Intake issues?  Harness issues?  Tell me whatcha know!

Jenn Morgan

Hi Jean,
in my E30 there's an E36 M42 engine, installed with E30 M42 engine management.
you can search and see my installation thread back from over three years now.

M44 and M42 engine mgmt are very different and adopting will take a lot of hassle, it will be easier to go with 3rd party mgmt (MS / MOTEC) and get better results.

Engine management / Re: M44 into E30 and EWS
« on: March 11, 2013, 09:26:43 AM »
There is a M42 DME that supports knock sensors that has no AWS in it.
im not sure if it is OBDII, i think it doesnt.
you should look for DME model that came on BMW cars wirh DISA M42 engines, in the years of 1993-1994
there are also 1995 DME's like this, but in this year there were with and w/o AWS, and i think its not worth the chance.

In my car i have 1996 M42 engine, with E30 DME, but as the engine supports knock sensors, my next upgrade would be moving to new M42 DME with knock sensors.

Engine management / Can i swap E30 ECU with an E36 ECU?
« on: July 30, 2012, 06:09:56 PM »
Im running M42 with 1990 E30 ECU,
i got a chance to get E36 1993 ECU
are the ECU's swappable?

basically i want to add ping sensors to the engine, would the stock E30 harness will do and all i'll need to add are sensors wires, or should i rebuild the whole harness?
E36 harness is not available for me at this stage.

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / DASC on E30 M42, tuning questions.
« on: June 12, 2012, 03:58:48 AM »
yes,
i removed the stock fuel pressure regulator and replaced it with the RRFPR that DA provided.
i understand that you can use any RRFPR, but you should check ur A/F ratio using a wide band to make sure you're not running too lean

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / DASC on E30 M42, tuning questions.
« on: June 10, 2012, 04:20:55 AM »
feel free to narrow down text and send concrete questions -
i have an M42 with DASC installed and running perfect on my E30
engine mgmt is stock 1991 E30 M42 ECU.
AFM is stock M42 AFM
Injectors are SAAB 900 (i think they are 280 cc instead of the stock 180)
and that is pretty much it

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Swapping M40 to E36 DISA M42 - Step By Step
« on: August 03, 2011, 03:40:03 AM »
it is totally possible to use E36 M42 loom, but make sure it is pre 1996 one, as the EWS become standard in 1996, adding another level of complexity to the swap.
basically, you everything should plug in ok, the only differences is the EGR that E36 supports and E30 doesnt, plus - you may also need to do more accurate E30 to E36 routing of the electrical lines in order to connect the C101 conector ok.

i think al of this is covered here in M42club...

Engine + Driveline / Dual mass clutch kit on a single mass flywheel?
« on: March 17, 2011, 11:56:04 AM »
Can i use clutch kit of M44 1.9 Z3 on a 1.8 M40 E30?

the differences are twin mass flywheel on the M44 vs. single mass on the M40 E30.

please let me know

Ron.

Engine + Driveline / [e36]vacuum reservoir
« on: October 07, 2010, 10:51:54 AM »
this is part of the DISA system in the E36 M42 engine.
it controls a flap door that selects air flow between the long and short runners of the intake manifold.

if you have an E36 management and wiring harness - than all the required parts are there and you should only connect that.

it goes underneath the intake manifold, and two screws are holding it to the manifold support bracket.

hope that helps

Ron

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Swapping M40 to E36 DISA M42 - Step By Step

Here in Israel, M42 E30 was never sold officialy.
beside one or two cars brought by tourists, no M42 E30 are available, neither the oficial BMW dealer will agree to provide parts / service to those cars

so basically, we shared the same problem.
my way to solve this issue was to use E30 M42 harness and modify its C101 connector.
another friend to whom i've helped swapping an M42 in used and E36 harness, but pre 1994, earning the DISA system along with stock knocking sensors (which is great if you want to boost your engine)

like i did, you will have to adapt that original harness to the C101 connector so that the gauge cluster will work.
in addition, im not certain how a E36 EWS system will work in with a E30 cluster, as i remember that the EWS has also something ot do with the display.

best thing to do is to use <1994 ECU and harness along with any year M42 engine

HANASICH..would this be useful to me??

im not sure, this should work with the M50 / M52 engines.
im not sure if the M40 / M42 harness's goes the same way.
i will try to find the schematics and upload it here soon.

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Injector size for DA supercharger

You need to find a tuner that can work with BMW in your area and put in 30LB injectors. I have a 10psi turbo tune for that motor but it would be useless with the DA supercharger kit

you might as well wrote
"leave the original ECU in place and put megasquirt in the trunk"

i was expecting a more technical answer.
i would like some guy to mess with my car without me knowing what he's doing (and the sense behind his actions)
at least with my RRFPR i can use wide band and fuel pressure indicator to find out how reach am i running :)

Do you know what injectors does SAAB 9000 2.0 turbo use? what fuel pump?

or you can do thing's correctly and delete the RRFPR get 30LB injectors and a proper tune and make 200whp@10psi

Please elaborate - i'd love to hear more about that

the RRFPR is nothing im too fancy about it.
i'd love to get rid of it - it catches police eyes and make nothing but trouble.
how can i stay with stock ECU and get rid of the RRFPR?

do you have trouble with knocking? I did, even when my AFR was spot on, so i had to dial the ignition timing back

at first, with stock injectors - i did have knocking problem.
i tried using better fuel (98 octane instead of regular 95) and it did the trick most of the time.
but final answer to knocking was changing injectors to SAAB 900 turbo ones, which rate 220 instead of the stock 180 injectors.
now my car runs pretty reach most of the times.

another solution can be moving on to >1993 CPU which support knocking sensors and can compensate ignition timing better than pre 1993 ECU - of course this only applies if ur engine block is post 1993 and support knock-sensors as well harness and ECU support those as well.
