Engine + Driveline / Lost interior heat

Really old thread revival, but wanted to make mention this graphic helped me solve my no heat problem.

I thought it was a clogged heater core, but after pulling this valve, I discovered it was the culprit.

On this topic, can anyone tell me if the bypass valve should trickle or flow freely?  When I was testing its flow with water, it dribbled out, a little heavier than droplets, but not completely free like I would imagine.

Found the culprit - Loose FPR Hose

Thanks Dave,

I pulled apart some of the console and I think my heater valve has failed.  I also agree on a bad tstat.

I recently purchased a '91 318i with no maint history.

The car does not have any heat coming out the vents.

List of things I checked/noticed
-Fan/motors work, as the A/C works fine
-No matter how much the car is warmed up, idle or driving, no heat
-Temp gauge would output around the 1/4 to 1/2 (closer to 1/2) when fully warmed up
-I bled it today and saw some bubbles, but not much..reading a few ticks away from 1/2 way now
-The coolant hoses in the engine bay connected to the firewall (to heater core) are both cold when engine is warm
+BUT the block hose is getting some heat (on the block side), but the actual hose to the firewall is still cold

Is my car still not fully bled?  I read the countless threads on the difficulty of bleeding the car, so I'm not sure if I'm totally there yet.  I hand pumped the upper hose and I've revv'd and bled a few times now.

General Topics / Why do people give the M42 engine a hard time?

I just found this on wiki lol

The M42 is forged on the thighs of a thousand virgins, of shavings from the gates of Hades. Zeus himself is responsible for the design, which its self is the result of Venus and Saturn having interplanetary sex. Many m42s were melted down and used by Saddam Hussein as WMD's. Indeed the Ark of The Covenant, which brought down the walls of Jericho, contained an M42. The Challenger shuttle was the only shuttle not to be powered by the m42, we all know how that ended. The magnetic wobble, experienced by Earth every few centuries is the result of some halfwit stalling a 318is. The 318is is galvanised with the skin of Jesus himself, making it impervious to friction, wind resistance and aerodynamic drag. When Jesus walked on water, he was actually driving a 318is.

There. The concise history of all things m42.

Engine + Driveline / getting oil in the spark plug tube???????

+111111 to everyone's comments.

Just be careful when torquing down the valve cover bolts.  They do not require much force to strip the holes.

Not a direct answer, but a solution to that is found in the 'mess under the intake' thread.

General Topics / How many of you have the AFM adapter harness?
« on: March 06, 2009, 11:00:41 AM »
Funny you mention this..

Other day I had driven my M42 just fine to 7-11 and back.  A few hours later, upon startup, the engine was idling wild.  Jumping from 500-2k, surging up and down.  Had zero time to mess around, and borrowed a car to get to work.

Check engine popped up, and I pulled the code.  Got 1215: AFM..

My dad the next day (while I was at school), fiddled with the AFM, and unplugged and replugged the circular connection to the AFM, and voila!

My first winter with the car.

I usually let it warm up for 1-2 minutes each day before driving off.  Shifting around 2.5-3k, it takes about 5-6 minutes after driving off.  So about 6-8minutes each winter day.  It's about 25-35 degrees this month.

I believe I have a bad tstat though.

What about you guys?  State the ambient temps too!

Engine + Driveline / M42 valve adjustment?
« on: January 15, 2009, 03:09:42 PM »
hydraulic valves, which the M42 has, are designed to never require servicing.  But this does not mean they go bad, or make terrible valvetrain noise over the life of the car.

However, the M20 found in most other E30s, do require valve adjustments.

The owner probably got mixed information, and is concluding a possible rough valvetrain noise to be fixed by adjusting them to spec.
