Guess I'll introduce myself since I just picked up a m42 318 over the weekend. I've had an ugly silver m10 for about 4 years, it's sans radio, PS, AC, just about everything I could pull out. I use it as a track car, but I wanted to give the m42 a shot.

Right now it's stock stock stock. Something about the camshaft position sensor is flaky, so sometimes it doesn't like to run. Once I figure that out, and replace the control arm bushings, I think it'll be a nice DD. And it even has a CD player! :p  And I love the 4drs. Got 147k on the clock and is quite clean. If I decide I have the budget this year, maybe I'll swap the suspension off the m10, add a cage and bang it around in SpecE30. We'll see! :D

Nice looking car .
I believe the previous owner tried to get some help for that car on here .
He was from virginia also I believe.
This is a small but rapidly growing community here for these cars . I'm sure you'll find lots of Knowledgeable info. Make sure you get a Bentley Manual and a Multi Meter if you don't already have one .

Did he? (*edit* I think I found his thread about it, yup) I think he was tired of the reoccuring camshaft sensor problems, hopefully I'll figure it out. As much trouble as we had starting it, and the fact that it died twice on us and wouldn't restart for 10 min, I can't believe it actually made the 4 hr drive home without issue! It's got a new sensor, so it's pretty much down to the ECU and wiring, I think I'll throw an ECU at it (since that's easier) and see what happens.
And yes, I'm pretty well stocked on tools, and my Bentley's so used the cover came off and I had to put it in a 3 ring binder. Guess I need the E36 one now too for this engine!

Hey there
Hey! See, I liked your car so much, I copied you. I have 4 fewer lugs though, so I'm still feeling inferior. :p I have talked to Rob before about his, in fact, I visited their new shop just the other weekend (I used to work for them). If I go that way with mine, I'll probably hit him up and see who can finish theirs first. :D

Thanks for the warm welcome all!

One "theory" question if you guys know.... I didn't know (until trying to get this thing to start, and unplugging/wiggling them) that this had a cam and crank sensor. Do you know WHY it does? Just curious. Kind of seems redundant to me, I would think the other could be calculated since the two are USUALLY connected. heh....  now if it were redundant, and it could work fine with one or the other, that would be hot, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I'll look through my Bosch injection book to see if they discuss this in there, but I don't remember seeing such a thing.

I think the crankshaft P.S.  handles the spark timing while the camshaft P.S. handles the fuel injection timing . I don't know why they are not combined.I guess those Germans aren't so smart after all. :D
I'm interested to hear how you make out with erratic running of your car . It will be a good mystery solved.

Good Luck

Gave it a quick wash and a touch of wax this weekend, it's a nice lookin car IMHO... although I'm still not sure what I'm going to use it for!

BTW, Rob (of Bimmerworld) mentioned that the crank and cam position sensors had to be separate since the cam timing is adjustable. Sounds like a reasonable reason to me, I'll go with that. :p

heh, previous owner's plates... they definitely have a home on my garage wall :p

BTW, a replacement ECU seems to have fixed the running problems:
