Jay's E30 316i Euro M42 Swap
« on: March 13, 2014, 12:58:29 PM »
Hello everyone, i am Jay from The Netherlands. I've always searched this site for information and I thought that it was
time to register on this forum.

My car is/was a 316i Type 2 with an M10 engine.

Times have changed and i wanted just a little bit more power.
Luckily my buddy had an M42 that was planned for rebuild, but he never had the time for it. So it became my
engine.

This is how it arrived.

New chain, tensioners, sprockets, water pump ect. And boxes full of parts it was crazy sorting everything out.

Started with the head. The engine had a timing issue, there were about 10 valves that were bent.
Brand new ones have been installed and I resurfaced the valve guides.

Installed the oil pan and cleaned the engine.

Thanks to this forum I removed the heater plate.

It is a really hard work to clean this years of dust and oil had to be removed.

Time to remove the old M10. Runs great, was abused many times on the Nurburgring and never broke down.

My battery ventilation is gone now.

Cleaning again

Installed a BMW 2002 Flywheel with a modified slave cylinder, because I don't have a 323 Euro TOB and
I do have a welding machine. The Flywheel has a new M50 ring gear so it would work with my M50 starter.

This is how it currently sits in the garage. I installed a big M50 radiator and a oil vapour separator.
After 10 attempts to get the coils in the right order the M42 fired for the first time and guess what?
It runs like crap. But that's why I registered.

Very nice!
What are your plans for the Air Intake/Filter with your oil separator living on the spot where it used to be?

I just had to make a bigger bracket for the AFM. And I mounted a peace of tube with a 45 degree angle so the
K&N filter would fit nicely in the corner.

Wooowooo!! What are you going to do with the M10? Make it a table?

Lol jk...love seeing engine swaps, they're my favorite. You did a good job.

So what's going on with the M42, how is it running like crap?

it's fixed finally. the vapour separator had a calculated vent in de cap, so I had a vacuum leak and the
AFM was faulty. runs great now but oil spilled from the filter housing so that's up next.
And the table is a great idea.

The very first BMW I ever drove was a brand-new 1984 316i. It was a rental car and it was in Naples, Italy.

Boy, did we have fun. 8)

The oil catchtank, is that a QSP product?
the hoses that came with it looks like shit, add some pron with braided lines ;-)  totally overkill but it looks good :D

That's what the al say here. But I kind of like the ''garden hoses'' because you can see what is happening,
and it looks ridicules.

One advice regarding starter: as I know m52/54 angine starters are with thread in starter housing so you will not have to install those crazy nuts to fix the starter motor.

I fitted a S50 starter because of the hard to reach nuts.
Anyway I replaced the O-ring and packing of the oil filter housing 3 times
but it just keeps on leaking so I guess its time to find a new oil filter
housing. On ETK I saw that you have two types of filter housings and I
wonder are they exchangeable?

As I know officially there was only one type. Another type is probably from E36 M42/M44. Check the mating surfaces where O-rings are fitted. All of the should be clean.

P.S. I just moved few weeks ago from  Maastricht ;)

I just bought an M42 filter housing. Now I hope that this will work
because it's getting frustrating knowing that everything was installed clean and
correctly and that it shouldn't leak but it does :'(
Ill install it next weekend.
