M42 Turbo Oil Return Line
« on: March 04, 2013, 12:22:03 PM »
Hello All

I am planning a top mount turbo project for my E30 M42 318is and would like to know if it is possible to tap into the block to install the turbo return line instead of the oil pan location. Please give me your suggestions on the best location on the block.

You comments are welcomed....Pics too if possible.

Thankd

I saw some people did it on the oil dip stick. It is not the best place but easy to do.

Other sugestions are drill the hole in block or sump above oil level and install the fitting for the hose. This way all the things should be nice and compact.

Agreed. You can drill and tap above the sump line.

Thanks for the pics ......Anyone else with a picture of the block being tapped for turbo oil return. This should be helpful for all the novices like myself.

Here is my oil return line, if you tap into the block then you need to do it when the motor is stripped down

Here is where we did it...  Don't forget to factor in your motor mount and exhaust locations.

Is there a reason for installing the return here as opposed to the standard return back into the oil pan? Personal preference? Engine oil starvation? More vacuum or a more direct, vertical alignment?

The oil return should be above the oil line in the pan. If it is not the oil can back up in the return line and burn in the turbo (smoke out the exhaust).

We installed the inlet farther back in the block in order to allow the oil to cool against the pan as it ran down to the sump.  It was also above the sump level.
