Has Anyone Installed an Oil Catch Can on PCV Breather Hose?
« on: April 29, 2011, 09:44:08 PM »
I am going to be overhauling my engine's entire cooling & air/ventilation system in a couple of weeks. Since I am going to all this trouble, I would like to stop all the oil seepage from the crankcase...most of the intake system is coated in oil and it is really annoying. Aside fro the mess, it shortens the life of all the rubber bits.

So, who's found a nice clean way to install an oil catch can in there? I'm looking for simple, effective & compact solutions. Post yours up!

I had a pretty nice oil catch setup on my previous 525i with the M50 engine in it that I have been thinking of doing for my M42 as well. what you do is hook up a moisture trap/oil separator for a compressor with two barbed fittings to slip on the breather hose for the in/out. Its only about $10 in parts and an hour of your time.

I dont think a "hose into an empty pepsi bottle" was the concept he was looking for.  :)

use a compressor air filter, they sell em at harbor freight for $6 then you just use some hose nipples the correct size that screw right into the air filter. $10 bucks and looks tits.

I used this on my Supercharged M50 and it worked great. Nice clear plastic so you can see how much oil it has pulled and has a drain on the bottom so you don't have to remove it to drain it.

The only problem is that during winter water collected in the bottle can freeze and you can end up with blocked breathing hose :)
P.S. Used for about two years without any problem.

Good ideas guys. I hadn't really thought about using HF/McMaster. I found an inexpensive, inconspicuous filter. Small, cheap & discrete.

Now I just need to find a local shop with a good parts cleaner. I am rebuilding all the PCV & coolant stuff on the engine in a couple weeks, and since I'll be adding this filter, I might as well get all the gunk out once & for all!

Will-do. I'll take a couple pics once I get the catch installed (might be a few weeks before I get around to rebuilding the PCV & cooling systems though).
