Turbo Pics and questions
« on: August 08, 2006, 05:44:42 PM »
Hi long time listener first time caller here

has anyone strapped a turbo onto their m42 on here? got any writes ups/lists etc?

heres a couple of pics of a local iS turbo, putting out around 350hp (hearsay, but i know who worked on it and $$ gone into it so i don't have any disbelief)

i'm not sure what engine work he has done, but i know its motec.

when turbo, what internals need changing? i imagine just pistons, to change the high compression? does anyone have any pictures of stock vs turbo iS pistons?

thanks for any answers and info, im a bit of a m42 n00b being a m20 man too!

The sticker on the strut tower in the last picture may as well say "Ouch... my ass"

I'll be all over the turbo thing just as soon as I recoop financially from making the car drivable and safe. Then once my car is done I'll be building the parts for other people ;)

thats fine, you can lower it a ton of other ways though.

shave your pistons, new pistons, bore, stroke, ...the list goes forever

Chain works just like the belt.... that's why you have the indexing squares on the back of the cams and adjustable cam gears. The tensioner will take the slack just like before and all will be well. You could STACK thicker headgaskets and still get away with it fine.

And more bore with the same piston CC will make compression higher.

I'm planning on a thicker M44 gasket. Stacking a couple MLS gaskets would be nice but Cometic gets a ton for those things.

Aha! So that's what the slots in the cam gears are there for - i.e. adjusting the relationship between the  crank gear at TDC and the cam gears to compensate for variations in head gasket, deck height, etc.

So how do you do it when you are reassembling the engine? Does Bentley cover this?
I try to learn something new every day, I'm going to bed now!
