Engine + Driveline / Oil Pump Pickup
« on: April 24, 2011, 12:14:55 AM »
yup, that's the relief valve on the left side.

drain's on the right side, as the motor tilts right in the car.

Suppose you could just feed the square hole, as the bypass valve can dump
back into the pan...

Engine + Driveline / Detailed oil system info?
« on: April 18, 2011, 02:41:13 AM »
One would assume.  Other one is having a devil of a time finding them.

Without pulling off the back half of the chain case, it's a pain to
figure oil flow around the filter housing.  I'm giving up and taking
pressure off the back of the head.  Yay.

awww.... you just made a unique car a lot more desirable...  not 'pretty', I agree,
but totally space-alien '60's cool...

Engine + Driveline / Mustang Injectors in an M42 engine
« on: April 15, 2011, 04:23:07 PM »

these are the later 318 m42 injectors.  They flow 235cc/min @ 53 psi

but by the flow pattern, they are 4- pintle.

There's a  really 'easy' way to tell if your injectors are too small-
scope the injector pulse signal.  As long as you're not over about 85%
duty cycle, your injector's big enough for your motor.
If you go over that, or go to that and sit there while the engine starts to
lean out, then a bigger injector's indicated.

'easy' he says.

Engine + Driveline / Hesitation after Injector Cleaner
« on: April 15, 2011, 12:06:46 PM »
It's hard to troubleshoot multiple systems at once.
If you can get a fuel pressure gauge into the supply
line for the fuel rail, that'll help diagnose the fuel system.

the cam sensor fault does have multiple causes- but it's
worth making sure the sensor's actually working and hooked
up.  They do fail.  And the wiring gets brittle and fatigues, the connector
corrodes or breaks...

How old are your plug wires?

Engine + Driveline / Oil flow diagram?
« on: April 15, 2011, 01:00:37 AM »
I'm trying to figure out how oil flows around the pump housing/regulator/
1-way valves and filter housing in a late (1995) M42.

Bentley doesn't seem to have the diagram that shows it- at least in the E36 version
(d'oh, as I type this, I think, I've got the E30 Bentley at the shop)

And while we're at it, how do you get search to look for phrases?

It couldn't even find 'search operators!'
(yes, I did a search... heh)

thanks,

Sludge.  Uneven wear on the cam lobes.  Very late responses on this bb...

ah, yeah, the 'early' e36 (before 1996) is a royal pain.

Yes, Dorothy, you DO have to unplug the reverse light switch to
remove the lower intake manifold...

Not one of BMW's finest.  Neither was that plastic hose....  yep, mine's a 95...

Engine + Driveline / Water Pipe Connector Broken!
« on: April 15, 2011, 12:39:22 AM »
...and when you get in there, you'll find you end up spending hundreds on things that
don't work.  DISA valve.  Hoses.  Cracked knock sensors.  Breather hoses...
blah blah blah.   It adds up.

Stupid plastic hose...

M42 Reference / Engine failure / timing chain slipped
« on: April 15, 2011, 12:32:42 AM »
well, since the thread's back-
pulled head at 179k due to a failed black plastic water pipe,
and the majority of the chain components are fine.
The vertical rail on the tension side, however, had lost adhesion to the metal-
how much longer it would have gone is anyone's guess.
And all the solid plastic tensioners were very brittle.

So my take is that they probably would have come apart pretty soon...
I'm replacing all the plastic, and leaving all the metal (except the tensioner)
because, well, the car was $600...

fwiw,
