Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Re: Wiring for E36 swap into E30
« on: August 15, 2014, 07:40:48 AM »
The e36 intake manifold won't fit under the hood of the e30. The oil pan and engine mounts will be required from an e30 as well. The entire e36 wiring harness can be used. It may be possible to run it on the M40 harness but you would lose knock sensor capability. I'm not sure if the Motronic versions are similar.

I have 2) e36 engines that run hanging on an engine hoist. One will be changed over soon to fit the e30. I will tery to answer any questions you may have.

Hello,

Here is a link illustrating the capabilities of the inverted header turbo set-up on Watkins Glen during the Zone 1 48 hours PCA event June 6-8 2014:

There have been many improvements since then; mostly safety related.

Anyone out there know what this is? I can't remember. Our return is on the passenger side of the lower pan and works perfectly, even on the track (Watkins Glen). If this point is used, get it attached as high as practical.

We have the stock Getrag 240 with a 3.45 LSD. Ours is turbocharged, approx 180 HP. It works well for us on highway and track.

It is easier to change the diff than a gearbox.

I agree good headers can make a difference. It seems that to gain 15 HP on a 1.8 you would have to go from a cast iron, poorly designed manifold to a proven set of headers.

Back when the M42 was designed with a well engineered ss header for that era, most cars were sporting cast, log style manifolds. This makes me wonder if BMW had a stillborn idea of a certain class of racing with that engine. Does anyone out there know of any programs they may have had back then?

The factory header that was on our car has one small welded bung/ threaded plug for each downpipe a couple inches from the head. It would make a great place to monitor EGT's for each cylinder. I am wondering if anyone else's header has these ports. Let us know!

There must be some dyno time with stock versus aftermarket headers here somewhere but I couldn't find it.

Suspension / Re: How to eliminate ABS

We did the 'T' and will change the lines around later to clean up the bay. It works great and gives us room for our intercooler.

Suspension / Re: Standard shocks with race springs?

Ran our 'stock header turbo build' E30 318is in Zone 1 PCA at Watkins Glen June 7-8 2014 with H&R 2 inch lower race springs, 2) 9 mm rubber spring bushings up front 1) 10 mm and 1) 3 mm in the rear.

All other suspension parts are stock. The front struts were Monroes (least expensive) installed in 2011 and rear shocks before the PCA event with matching cheap Monroes for $15.00 each...Haha!

This is used on street and track and is a fantastic set-up for both.

My son was signed off for solo. The instructors were both very happy with the feel of the car and remarked "it is a great platform". This was only his second DE event. Uploading youtube video of a solo run. I will add it here when finished.

Engine + Driveline / Re: Mustang Injectors in an M42 engine
« on: June 16, 2014, 07:58:07 AM »
Running early Ford motorsport 24lb 4 hole injectors found in Mustang Cobras and more importantly pick-ups and vans with 460 (7.5 L) V-8's.

installed in a 1991 E30 318is with the 'stock header turbo build' in the thread that we wrote up here in May 2011 as Esprit Aviation. Engine is entirely stock except for our Esprit Motorsports single row timing chain conversion. It has approx. 145K miles on it and has never been rebuilt.

Updated since then: 8psi, saab 900 intercooler, Aeromotive RRFPR
@60psi base pressure

Data from Stan Weiss site is virtually identical. Thanks to both for providing detailed info.

The stock headers are very well made. Why would you want another header?
