Today I finished tearing down the 5/95 build date M42 that I picked up last week. GOOD NEWS! It already has the lighter connecting rods and piston oil squirters of the M44.

im running 8.5:1 with a holset HY35. will be running about 20psi and conservativly hoping for 300 at the wheels. should be running by spring if all goes according to schedule!

Parts gathered so far:
M44 +0.50 Maxsil Pistons from Bavarian Recyclers (eBay): $400
M44 Crank: $100
VW Lifters: $230
MM Valve Springs/Retainers/Guides: $710 ($50 of this was renting their spring compressor)
MM Single Row Chain: $240
ARP Head Studs: $195
ARP main studs: $90

M20 13lb flywheel w/new clutch, 323i TOB, and shorter bolts: $300
4 hole (type 3) 19lb Mustang Injectors: $40 (going to push these with a PnP M50 3.5BAR/50psi FPR)
MarkD chip: $185
COP Kit: $150

VAC quoted me $850 for the CatCams I want, waiting to purchase...

I need to get to the machine shop(s) asap, prolly gonna take next monday off

NOW we're talkin!!! I want to get ITB's for my m50 but don't know if it'll be worth it power wise. I've yet to see any numbers for the gains...

teasers...

The M44 pistons i got are noticeably lighter than the stockers, wish I had a small digi-scale. You can kinda see in the background that they come with tapered wall wrist pins too

I will be dropping the head, rotating assembly, and block at the machine shop on monday. I ordered ARP main studs today p/n 201-5001, only a couple dollars more than stock main bolts on amazon. Once I get good specs from the machinist i'll be ordering bearings and putting stuff together.

Just dropped the bottom end at rebello racing in Antioch. Head is getting cleaned up in Sacramento.

Great looking build so far. Do the old and new piston match up height-wise when you install the pin in both to compare them side by side because from the picture they are at different heights? Did you send your timing cover along with your head to be resurfaced?
