Here is a teaser about the changes we've made to the car.  Check it out at Car Domain

It may be hard to recognize it as the same car.  Check out our car in Performance BMW Magazine too!

Here is the Performance BMW article article and some shots of version 2.0

Version 2.0 at Buttonwillow last weekend

We still need to add a few more sponsor stickers but the look is about 95% complete.

Good lord.  Your car is incredible.  way to go

it says 310mm brakes in the article.  Is that right, or are they the 300mm massive kit??

Thanks for the kind words.

It has taken a lot of work to get this far and many long nights working on the car.

We need to thank some of our sponsors like Eurostop USA (fiberglass body kit), Vorshlag Motorsports (engine mounts, trans mounts & camber plates), Metrix Motorsport (high performance diff) and Howerton Engineering (water injection) who helped us with version 2.0.

The brake kit is the Willwood kit that UUC sells.

That is just excellent work there.  You guys deserve the recognition of the article.  Is version 2 the same car but reworked?  Or is it a "new" car?

I want to buy a set of those rear fender flares you had on version one for my project.  They wouldn't be for sale would they?

Version 2 is the same car but completely reworked.  We basically took the car completely apart and rebuilt it making a bunch of changes.  Some of the work that we did:

- moved the engine back 1.5 inches
- moved the exhaust system back
- installed Getrag 240 (318is) trans
- re-routed the charge pipe from intercooler to TB
- new engine mounts, new trans mounts
- new camber plates, new M3 control arms, new CABs
- minor engine rebuild (new rings is all the engine needed)
- new water injection system
- new diff temp gauge
- installed newer E30 fuel tank
- new fuel tank filler under the wing
- reworked rear fender tire clearance
- new fibreglass body panels
- new graphics
- new rear wing & custom wing up rights
- designed/developed a new intake plenum
- removed spare tire well

The old fender flares are long gone.  You could purchase a new set of those flares from Eurostop USA.  Tell them we sent you.

Im intrigued by your choice to switch back to the m42 tranny. Is this purely a gearing choice? or trying to get the car lighter?

Will be interesting to see how well it holds up. The car has turned out great, a credit to the effort you guys put in. I'm very keen to tear into mine for stage 2!

This car started life as a 325i.  When we put the turbo M42 into the car we used the Getrag 260 (325i trans).  To do that we needed to move the engine forward about 1.5 inches.  We considered it a temporary solution until we could track down and install a Getrag 240 in the car.  It not only required a trans but it also required a drive shaft.

Our first goal was to put the M42 where BMW meant it to be which improves weight balance.  That should also provide a slight benefit to braking and handling.

As a bonus, the Getrag 240 is lighter and many of the "version 2.0" mods were done to lighten the car.

Lastly we think the gearing difference should be good for us.  We need to run the car more in this new configuration to fully determine that.

One of the main reasons we decided to build the M42 was because it is cheaper to build this motor over any BMW 6 cylinder.  2 less cylinders worth of parts makes it more cost effective.  Another reason is that since this isn't an "S" motor (a motor that came from an M3) parts are much cheaper.  Cores are plentiful and inexpensive vs. any M3 motor.  Availability and cost effectiveness also applies to Getrag 240's.

As with many systems on the car, we bring spares to each race.  We will have a spare trans in the trailer.  We could almost build another E30 with the spares we have in our trailer.

Thnks for the indepth reply :)
I'm gearing up to tear into my 318iS this off season and go boost, but on a much tighter budget than you guys ;)

I'm planning to move the engine back even further, using a 6 cylinder tailshaft (~100mm/4" shorter) and obviously custom engine mounts. You guys can think of yourselves as inspiration!

Your reason for choosing an M42 are much the same that I stuck with mine. Congrats on the very nice build, goodluck with the upcoming races. The car is a true credit to the DIY, hope to get mine there one day.

Whoa...Unbelievable, absolutely unbelievable. The car looked great before, but now it's marvelous. I wish I had the cash and know-how to put a project like that together. I would love to build a machine and race it. Guess I need to start somewhere. How about your COP kits, any available?
