Interest in COP bracket? [PICS]
« on: July 24, 2006, 01:37:22 AM »
OK, now that I have the digital position readouts on my mill working I can start making some nice brackets.  I got a hole saw too so, combined with a boring head & bar, I can make nice 40mm diameter holes instead of square ones.

Here is the oen I made today.  It turned out well, the only think I need to change is the offset of the threaded holes on the bottom...they need to come further left about .9mm and up about .4mm...the coil bodies are contacting the valve cover.  This will be corrected on all future brackets.

The cost will tentatively be $40 for the bracket and mounting hardware.  Making the harnesses the proper length...that is your responsibility :D .  It is sort of a pain, but well worth it.  I put a writeup in the DIY section for disassembling the connectors.

PICS!

Oh, and do not be fooled...for those that have never used precision machine tools (non-CNC), it may look real simple, but I will not even try to explain how it isn't, even with digital readouts!

2 questions.

1) Are the securing holes threaded? The two that are above the valve cover bolts. I was wondering if they could be used to secure a cover if the bolts were longer?  I would love a cover that had the roundel and "M42 POWER' on it.
2) Could a plastic holder or two of some sort be mounted on the tab for the wires. Strictly for appearance purposes.
I think it looks good - up to commercial standards. I'll be getting one. This may be the impetus I need to doll up my engine compartment. It currently comprises the the deepest, darkest part of the my little Bimmer's subconscious. A once good and true heart now covered in the filth and blackness of bad karma.

I have not realyl given too much thought to a cosmetic cover yet...it would be hard to make a cool one w/o a CNC center.  I think for now it would be the buyer's deal to make one.

I have wrapped up the harness wires real nice and trimmed them.  It looks pretty clean.  personally, I like having the coils visible on there...popping the hood for other enthusiasts will make the mod a little more clear.  Future brackets I think I will spend a little more time with the granite block & fine sand paper to give them a nice finish.  Anyone know of a good place that does anodizing/powder coating affordably?  If this were anodized/powder coated black, it would be sliiiick!

There should be several in your area. There are four in Austin - pop. 500,000.

Looks good!

Please put me down for one. Does the $40 include shipping? Let me know how you would prefer payment.

Thanks again,
Fabby

No, it is adamantium.  Unbreakable (it looks machined, but I actually cast it since we all know adamantium cannot be cut).

Yes.  The part is aluminum.

well then why do you want to anodized it so bad, just polish it up to match the fins of the valve cover

That looks teh hottness

I'm going to make my own, and I had been thinking of producing the part but I don't want to steal your fire now that you're doing them. So unless I come up with something so special and different as to warrant production and thus competition I'm going to steer clear out of respect for you and the masses of work that you've put out for this community.

I do, however, think I've found a coil pack source that doesn't involve trimming the field stack on the #1 coil so I'm going to have to buy one for a test fit. Although I did just pick up a set of six of the same coils you're using for $42.

Alternate bracket/coil idea are welcome.  I am not planning on making a living off of these (but don't steal the idea or the godfatherer may send some 'visitors' to your house to help you realize how sad idea theft makes him lol).

What sort of coils are these...do they use the same connectors as all the others that plug right in?

After massive research and sneaking into pit areas to take forbidden close up pictures of obscure part numbers on top of uber high end engines, then making phone calls to friends with special 15gb pirated Bosch programs and crossing those numbers in hacked factory parts programs for certain manufacturers whos cars I may never own, then crossing that number through parts sources to find a surprisingly reasonable price and availability to the general public... all I can tell you is that the original place I found them is in this picture and it's about to pass that all carbon fiber 9K+rpm E46 with ease.

Outside of that, I don't think I'm ready to give up much more information other than they have the spark capacity to fire more than 500 claimed (ie: lying out their asses) hp from 2L and do so at WOT for 24hrs straight without failure.

I can also tell you that they don't share the plug, but I'm certain I can get the plug housings, seals and terminals without trouble.

On the off chance I end up marketing these I may just have to pay you royalties:cool:

Oh... and yes I did take the above picture myself.

An oil pump for one of those "Pontiacs" is over $6000.
