Fuel tank replacement....interchangable with 325?
« on: May 04, 2009, 08:15:57 PM »
My car greets me with a strong gasoline smell when I go into the garage on some mornings.  I stuck my head underneath as much as I could (lowered) and the side of the tank is damp on the passenger side.  I'm guessing this indicates a tank needing replacement (?).  Can a 325 tank be used or do I need to find a 318i/is tank?

here's a very temporary fix for the gas smell:
open up the panel to the fuel pump, and look for a hole at the refill hose connection. once you find it (cuz i'm 90% sure there's one), clean up that area a bit and use either some mighty putty (yeah i know... but it works great! using it on my tank too!) or some make a gasket stuff that resists gas or some "fuel line leak" putty...
oh and just out of curiosity... was that tank full???

It has been doing it at different fuel levels.  This most recent time it was halfway between 1/4 remaining and half.

I have an 86 325is and the tank looks identical to my 91 318i, even has the little hose going from side to side.  However, the pump is different, with a different power connector, the filter mount has an aux pump too, and the plumbing is a little different.  I think it'd fit, if you swapped the pump and some new lines.  Some models had a different tank with a transfer pump too, I'm not sure which ones.

Did you check RealOEM?  The pics there can really be helpful, especially year-to-year.

yeah tried checking on real OEM, but I don't know why, I couldn't see the part numbers and it said that the parts I was looking for were unavailible/unknown or something...

325 uses a bigger tank IIRC, they should interchange, but your fuel level sender might be a little off. All tanks have an internal pump, early cars just have both.

Has anyone seen a writeup or pictures showing the steps to replace the gas tank  in a '91 318is?  I need to swap mine.

I used this write up and I took some photos when I did mine.
http://www.bmwpower.ca/bmw_tech_articles/bmw_e30/e30_bmw_gas_tank_replacement.html
I also replaced my guibo and center bearing while I was there.
Pretty straight forward . Make sure to preload the center bearing when re installing.
Make sure and buy a new connector pipe if it doesn't come with the new tank.
