Oil leak from oil filter assembly
« on: April 11, 2009, 06:31:41 AM »
My 1991 m42 seems to be leaking from the oil filter housing where it bolts up to the block. Any one have this problem? Looks like just a gasket and possible o-ring to fix it. Plus initial looks point to needing to remove alternator mounting bracket to pull off oil housing. Any input?  Mucho gracias.

Mine was leaking from the same place. I replaced the gasket and O-ring when I did the the heater plate removal as the top half was mostly disassembled anyway and now no more leaks. Alt bracket will need to be removed...If I recall bracket bolts to the block THROUGH the bracket as pictured on OEM...Not a tough job and no more puddles in the garage...

That  sounds about  right. Funny  I have a new rebuilt  engine and the only leak is form the part I put  back on. I took the oil housing off  to refinish and remember an o-ring and a gasket. What did you use for gasket  sealant?  I think  I might have used hight temp silicone  when I should haved used the stickier  stuff.

You shouldn't need any gasket sealant, that could be why it is leaking.

You put your gasket in dry Redhead?  That seems a bit odd/
