Isn't the m40 an 8v?

I think it would not work for numerous reasons.

the blocks are different - cooling lines and oil lines are not the same,
the M40 blick is also narower coz of the 8 v instead of a 16v...

The m43 raw blok is almost the same. The blok isnt any narower. but front cover  ,under cover for the front ,sump is different etc. and it got difrent typs of oil tubes/squrts under the pistons. and missing 2 oil holes in the midel of the pistons 2 and 3. i guess the m40 loks the same.
i compeard a m42 e30 to a 316m43

The block m40 and m42 are the same.
M40 to M42 konversion is possible. Diferense between these two engines thoroughly is in head and front aluminium part(dont know the name in einglish)where is mounted water and oil pumps and driving chain or driving belt .That aluminium part can be mounted with conformity gasket to m40 or m42 block.
Bearings are the same crank and rods too, pistons are diferent.
I know these info from my own expiriance.
But these parts and all work to do that  will cost more time and money then  baying used m42 in good condition.

oh ok makes sense,
and yea thought that might be the case just wanted to see if there was a cheaper option than replacing all the bearings etc in my m42 block i have at the moment.

You can install m42 front covers on m40 block ;)

I`m not sure if m40/m42 has any oil squirts under the pistons, I know that many people choose m44 block rather than m42 becouse of the oil squirts ;)

Yes it can be done, I´ve done a few already.
Blocks are exactly the same, M40 has oil squirters.
you have to swap everything else from the M42, even the crank.
Right now I have 10,000kms on my M40 engine with M42 block (converted M42 into M40)
