I've had the 1244 code since I bought my car. It ran just fine, but I replaced the camshaft position sensor anyway with a brand new one. I reset the ECU (unplugged the battery for an hour), but I still get 1244, and a CEL every so often that goes away if I take my foot off the gas. Should I just replace the O2 sensor? Would that get rid of the 1244 code and CEL?

The cam sensor isn't critical for running. I'm told that it's only for fine-tuning the spark advance. If it's not there the car will still run pretty well, just without the full spark advance curve. Same deal for knock sensors on the e36. That's one of the things I like about the Bosch Motronic - it'll run OK even if some sensors are bad and it'll let you know about it too.

The crank trigger wheel has enough resolution to fire plugs pretty accurately. Bosch decided that a signal failure from the crank sensor means no fuel pump power for safety's sake...no other reason. It's theoretically possible to run the engine off the cam or crank sensors.

Yes...That is the case...I just went through this a couple of weeks ago. The crank sensor has control of the fuel pump...A bad sensor will not let the fuel pump run...

I believe the cam sensor controls the amount of fuel for the injectors. If you disconnect the cam sensor your car will not run.
The crank sensor controls spark and the fuel pump.
If either of these sensors is out of spec then the car will not run or run very poorly.

actually... the other day i was troubleshooting a rough idle. found some vaccum leaks along with a UNPLUGGED CAM SENSOR! Mind you the car runs great(it just runs rough for about 20-30 seconds after initial start(hot or cold). it seems to reprogram itself on every start up.

real wierd.
i then plugged the sensor in, fixed vac leaks and reset my ecu. the car wouldnt start. just a weird experience im still trying to grasp.
