Valve Cover removal + reinstall
« on: June 16, 2006, 04:26:09 PM »
Any tips on how to remove the valve cover and reinstall? I'm basically looking for general info about the project, just anythign you guys have from experience, is it hard to do, etc.  for the tecnical stuff ill check out my bentely manual once i get home.  The reason is that i need to set in a loose/stripped screw, even after two other just got new hardened steel sleeves yesterday.  I talked to a BMW tech, he said i was fine for now but that i should go through and redo them all.  he said something about a time-sert, and replacing each of the little rubber pieces on the screws.  i took the loose one out for now so i dont loose it on the way up to oregon...wish the car luck...

Any tips/suggestions from previous experience? is this fairly easy to do?  thanks guys

1. Disconnect oil breather hose
2. Disconnect all spark plug wires and remove the wires and the plastic tray in which the wires slot into (it's held in by clips at each corner)
3. I can't remember but you may need to remove more of the plastic box the wiring runs through
4. Undo the 13 screws (11mm hex) around the cylinder head cover and the two in the centre near the spark plug recesses
5. When reinstalling tighten the screws to 10nm/89in-lb
6. Use a little gasket sealant around the half circle parts of the cover at the firewall end
7. You can reuse the gaskets if in good condition otherwise new ones are:

11121721876 cylinder head cover gasket
11121721475 spark plug chamber seal - lollipop shape
11121721476 spark plug chamber seal - O shape (3 needed)
