New guy with some Q's?
« on: October 13, 2008, 05:57:14 PM »
Hi guys! I just got a 94 318is and I read that this place is a good source of info on mods to do on that little m42 motor. I realize most of you guys seem to have the previous generation of car but are the m42 from the e36 the same as the one from e30?

Yes most of us have the E30's. Yes the motor is basically identical, parts can be swapped across but the motor does change to 1.9 with the M44. This changes the entire intake system. Start searching our forum and you will find tons of info about M42 vs M44

For the most part they are pretty similar. The E36 motor has a completely different intake manifold, slightly different headers, and a knock sensor. There are some other minor differences, but nothing entirely major.

Welcome to the club!

318's are fun cars, you will love yours.

For the most part yes. Chip, exhaust, lightweight flywheel are good options on the cheap.
