Swapping M42's and have a few questions.

Okay so I'm beginning to swap M42's out of my old 318is into my new one. While I have the motor(s) out I plan on doing a lot of other stuff that is otherwise easier while the motor is out.

This post was going to be longer and I was going to list the parts I already planned on ordering/ordered but I decided to keep it short for once.

So basically question is, What all should I replace/do to the motor while it is out of the car? Looking to do a small rebuild and nothing to intense.

Please post parts and where to buy them. Thanks in advance.

5. Clutch/Flywheel/throw out bearing

Sweet I already planned on the first 4 in your list. I don't know if I'll change the clutch as I'm using the one from my newer E30 and the previous owner claimed that it had been replaced recently (I guess we'll find out). But couldn't I just have my other flywheel resurfaced and maybe even shaved down? I maybe interested in the m20 flywheel conversion too...don't know yet though. Should I replace most of the Timing components like guides and tensioners and what not?

I also want to change out all the bushings and mounts to Polyurethane.

I know I'll probably buy the Motor and Tranny mounts from IE
but is there any other alternatives?

Not sure if this is the case with you LHD guys but you could swap the rack over for an E36 or Z3 rack to sharpen it up a bit while the motor's out, pretty easy job and it makes a hell of a lot of difference.

GrindCulture that would be an awesome upgrade but I'd have to find all the parts and read up on how its done. I've never really looked that much into it. Any DIY threads on the process???

I also should have mentioned that the motor I'm rebuilding has 140k miles on it and ran really well before I got in a car wreck with that car. It than sat from last January till now, and when my friends gave it a jump it fired right up on the FIRST turnover :eek:. They let it run for a while and took it around the block and then drove it from my parents house to my friends place in town where we'll be doing the work (40 miles) with no problems. So I'd say the motor is pretty strong still but I want to do all this maintenance and rebuild so I don't run into problems (at least I hope) while I'm in college. I start college January.

So I'm going to make a list of parts and I want people to either add to it or help me know what I shouldn't have to replace. Most parts will be from BMA or Bavauto.

Get the rack spacers from AKG Motorsport for $15. You do not need to modify the linkage on an airbag car. You need to open up the hole in the firewall around 1/2" down and towards the passenger side of the car to allow the steering shaft to pass through the firewall without binding.
