BMW E30 31.8IS M42 Throttle Body
« on: June 25, 2008, 02:33:35 PM »
Hi guys,

Just need some assistance here last week I took of my throttle body to get access to my inlet manifold. I polished both my engine heads rocker cover and intake manifold.

I now need some help in putting back the throttle body as there are some pipes I quite do not know where they go. Is there a manual out on the world wide web somewhere where it explains and shows a step by step guide of installing it back, if so could you please do let me know and I will shortly post some pictures of the polished engine heads.

All help is much appreciated

Many Thanks
Jazz

There should be 5 hoses, I think.  The really small one goes on the small side-nipple on the TB (for the fuel pressure regulator).  The bigger air hose on the top-left-front cones from the charcoal canister.  The really big air line on the bottom has a 90-degree elbow piece coming right off of it.

The 2 tricky ones are the bottom coolant lines.  There should only be one way to fit them on, although it honestly wouldn't matter if you did somehow reverse them.  Reattaching them requires you to seat the de-icing part (thinner back plate part) and install the hose clamp with a small ratchet.  Then carefully wiggle the rest of the TB in place and get the hose on, and tighten it with a screwdriver or ratchet, space permitting.

By the way... don't re-install the coolant heater plates unless you live in Montana or Canada... they're just in the way.  Bridge the two coolant lines coming up from that ugly cluster of vacuum lines to each other and leave those two plates off.  If you don't like the vacuum lines you have or are confused, simply run the valve cover hose connection to the bottom of the throttle body (put a catch can in there some day to keep the intake runners cleaner) and then run the connection from the intake manifold towards the firewall to the Idle Control Valve, and then from the Idle Control Valve to the air intake tube (underneath)  You're done.  Then you really don't have to worry about the big hydra-vacuum cluster beneath the lower intake manifold getting brittle and needing replacement.

There really shouldn't be anything else to it.  If you're anywhere near Texas I'd help you get it all together.  Chances are you're not...

Hey Jazz, is this still in bits? I might have some pics from my rebuild which could help. Refitting the tiny hoses behind the TB was pretty fiddly!
