E36 serpentine accessory problem>????
« on: April 19, 2008, 02:26:58 AM »
Hey guys, I just tried to finalize my motor today and I stumbled into one hell of a problem - the oil dipstick is not cooperating if I use a serpentine belt.

Did anyone come up with a way to solve that problem?

-Thank you all, Artem

I have converted mine to serpentine belt.
to clear the dipstick, you have to make it go between the crank pulley and the power steering pump, you will have to bend it in an "S" shape to make it go up again. and secure it with a clamp to one of the bolts down there(I think the tensioner or something around there). This makes it a little harder to pull the dipstick, but it´s ok.
I can post a pic or two if you want.

Damn, yea - can you please post a pic. I tried to do that, but I rushed it and ruined my dipstick. I should have a spare somewhere.

-Thank you very much!

Here are some pics of mine. I have no idea why i cant post up any pics - it fails me every time...

In any case, I will add the top of the dipstick tube to the hose and extend it exact amount needed for the dipstick to be touching the oil and then I will take it from there. It seems to be sealed up otherwise.

Also, I took apart my old motor and it looks damn good, valves are all straight, block crosshatch is better than that on my newer motor  I have no idea why as that motor has 78k miles on it, and my old one had that plus 100k.

Hey guys, here´s a pic of my solution to the dipstick deal, it´s been bent in an "S" shape, and bolted to one of the power steering pump bolts with a clamp.
It has enough clearance all around, it is a little harder to pull out, but the reading is accurate.

was there ever any resolution to getting the oil disptick & tube assembly fitting any better after performing a serpentine conversion?

Also, are there any better pictures of the front of an M42 after the serpentine conversion has been completed?  I've been trying to look for something online to see the entire pulley/accessory system layout, but have had no such luck finding a good image or pic....

Check the PDF in this thread.

They've got a good picture on the 3rd page.  They said they only had to bend it over about 10 degrees -  but might be different if you don't have the supercharger.  Good tip they throw in is to bend the dipstick tube in a vice with a rod inside the tube to keep it from pinching.
