After one bmw 318is owner in Lithuania tested (~1000km) this simple mod I tried it on my own M42. Two washers ~1mm thick each was installed between plug and hydraulic chain tensioner. Result: chain rattle disappeared in 2500-3000rpm band. :cool:

p.s. My engine block was shaved 0,9mm for 11:1 compresion ratio.

This is on used ~20kkm tensioner.

Unfortunatly second impresion was not so good (first attempt was with cold engine), but it works.

Do the washers go between the tensioner and the threaded plug that goes in behind it. I have thought about a mechanical version of the tensioner with an adjustment for the pressure as an alternative to the oil pressure/spring type that is OEM. Also with the tension applied by a toothed gear wheel instead of a guide rail. Timing belt cars use this approach with the external belt.

Tried this at the weekend, just one 1mm washer for now.

It worked! Sort of... still a little rattle at 3700rpm-4000rpm.

Then I drained the oil and found big end bearing peices.

why did you do this? wasn't it simpler changing the chain tensioner? i've done it on my 318is and it works well!

Any more updates on whether this is a good idea or not?! Seems like it could be asking for trouble.

I dont see how this would work. The spring inside is just gonna soak up the extra tension from the washers. I dont think it would be 100% transfered to the chain. I think this is just asking for premature tensioner failure. Any one else with me?
