93 318is - Update to bad engine noise.
« on: March 13, 2008, 04:37:05 PM »
I had a BAD clacking noise so after research I decided to pull a few things off my engine. :)

After removing the upper and lower timing case covers I found that the long guide rail and the lower guide are BROKEN! Also I have visible wear on my upper guide and the tensioner guide aswell. Kindergarten pic follows:

*The long guide rails pieces where all smushed up above the lower guide.

- The chain looks fine and all gears and sprockets look fine aswell. (Not too sure about crank sprocket as it comes pointy new, correct?)

Another issue I ran into was when I removed the Oil filter housing. When I removed the housing I noticed that the top area was PACKED full of sludge mixed with shavings (from my chain rail?) The housing itself and the area on the case where it corresponds too is clogged aswell.

And

I also just removed my cylinder head aswell and will get it cleaned up and resurfaced after I get the camshafts off.

Some questions I had:

1. Anyone have any suggestions for good quality headgasket? Or should I just grab the one they have available at Pelicanparts? Does it matter to get a thicker gasket since i'm getting head resurfaced?

2. Another thing too is that the tensioner rail/guide has the plastic ''pitted'' at the top and the top guide has visible wear from the chain. Should I replace these two parts aswell?

3. I removed the camshafts and was curious how the Camshaft bearing ledge comes out. It didnt just seem to lift off although I didn't want to use too much force.

I'd replace the timing-chain while you are in there, it must have taken some abuse.  It's not very expensive.

Depending on how much money you have to fix it and how long you want this to last and how many times you'd like to do these fixes will determine how badly you want to replace parts that are visibly worn.

After doing all the work to mine, I'd say buy as many new parts as you can afford. When you get it back together and it's all new you'll be happier. If you left some questionable part in there you'll always worry about it taking out all the good parts you bought.

I bought the headgasket set from RM European, it has nearly all the gaskets you need.

I pulled the pan and sound some metal pieces and LOTS of sludge around the pickup. This could explain alot of things.. I noticed aswell that the there was alot of corrosion with the gasket between the lower timing case cover and the block. I have everything apart now so I just have to deal with parts.

So this is what I was thinking:
(Cars PD 06/93)

Lower Timing case to block/head.
- Steel Gasket 11141734422 12.25
- Profile Gasket 11141247849 6.00

Head:
- Head Gasket 11121721546 41.75
- Head Bolt Set -   13.50
- Head Bolt Washers - (10) 7.50

Lower Timing Case:
- Profile Gasket - 11141247837 4.25
- Gasket Set - 11141721802 10.75
- Shaft seal - 11141439570 13.75

Upper Timing Case:
- GASKET SET - 11141721919 9.25

OIL PAN:
- Gasket 11131739592 11.00

CRANK PULLEY:
- HEX BOLT - 11211721100 7.50
- FLAT WASHER - 11231709977 7.75

TIMING SYSTEM:
- GUIDE RAIL -  11311247470 53.75
- LOWER GUIDE - 11311721419 43.50
- CHAIN TENSIONER  - 11311727342 102.50
- TIMING CHAIN  - 11311247160 58.00

OIL FILTER HOUSING:
- O-RING - 11421709513 5.25
- GASKET - 11421709800 1.25

WATER PUMP:
- O-RING -  11511714519 8.59

INTAKE/EXHAUST MANIFOLDS:
- Intake manifold gasket - 11-61-1-734-684 6.50
- Exhaust manifold gasket - 11-62-1-728-983 12.50(2)

--------------------------

Roughly $450 bucks for above mentioned parts. Prices were from Pelicanparts.. I hate this car. :(

Also does anyone have a few pictures of what a good condition crank sprocket looks like? I think mines fine.
Otherwise i'll have to get:
- CRANK SPROCKET - 09/1993 11211247338 51.00pp

This thread has what worn gears look like .The chain and associated sprockets should be replaced as a unit if they are worn.

good luck
