Oil Leak AHH!!
« on: January 30, 2008, 04:36:53 PM »
I have a bad oil leak some where around the oil filter housing. I am losing about a quart every 2 days. Could it be the oil filter housing thats bad or maybe the gasket? First I thought it was from the oil sensor thats located on the oil filter housing but as I checked around the front area near the belts its leaking more. Can someone help me out with this issue?

If it is the oil filter housing gasket where it attaches to the block how hard will it be to change this? Also where can I get the gasket at? Thanks in advanced.

Do a filter change and make sure you put in the two new O-rings.

That would be the easiest fix.

A leak that large should be able to be seen while the engine is running.

Betcha a dollar its the o-ring that mates the oil filter housing to the block.

Gasket *AND* an o-ring there.

Well I turned the car on to see where it was leaking from and it is coming from the oil pressure switch. The more I rev up the car the faster the leak. So could it be from that place only?

Edit: The leak seems to sit in like a little pocket on the block and as I drive the car it drips down to the oil pan and other spots since the fan is there also it blows it all over the place as I drive. Either way I am going to change the switch and see if It keeps on leaking if so I am changing the gasket on the oil filter housing.

Ya I did this about 6 months ago. Mine was leaking about 2 pancake sized oil puddles and when I replaced the gaskets it went away!

That shows you the "basic" steps for replacing the parts!

Can someone link me to where I can buy the gasket at? I am going to give the changing of the oil pressure switch a go first and if then it keeps leaking I will just change the gasket on the housing.

I have this same problem.
I replaced the o-ring and the gasket, but the bitch still leaks.

My next move is the oil Px switch. Hopefully that will fix it.

I'm getting sick of parking on the road or the grass so it doesn't mark the driveway.

i've learned to just accept that no matter how many oil leaks you fix on an M42, another one will pop up immediately.  so i just keep myself optimistic!  look at it this way.  it constantly gets fresh oil when you have to top it off ever week.  my worst leak currently is the profile gasket.  it flings oil all over the place from the crank pulley!  hahaha..

Ok guys its update time.

I have done the gasket for this already with new o ring and new oil pressure switch and now my car has the check engine light on. The first time I turned it on it last about 5 secs and then shut down. I turned it on again and it stayed on for a good 5 minutes and then I shut it off and when I turned it back on I got a weird noise like when a starter goes bad. So I turned it over again and it turned on fine no noise or anything but the check engine light was on and once I revved it up the light came off.

Whats up with that?

Hmmm... does the check engine light go on when the engine experiences low oil pressure?  If so, maybe that is it.

Did you prefill the filter housing before starting?
