Was EATON supercharger, now TURBO
« on: January 14, 2008, 02:12:08 PM »
I've found a cheap EATON supercharger from a 2003 Mercedes E200.
I'm wondering if i could install it on my e36 m42 and how much of a hassle would it be? I talked to the man and tomorrow i'm giving him the final answer if i buy it or not. Help me decide! :)
Side note: I'm not necessary going to install it right away, it can wait a while until i save some cash and my car isn't a daily driver, it's mostly a weekend car. Also i'm not sure if i can install it by myself or i'm going to have to go a specialized shop. Unfortunately the concept of using a supercharger is pretty vague for me.

Thanks in advance!

I installed one of those on an Escort GT a few years back. Made 7psi of boost. Real fun. I looked into this for the M42 and believe I found the best way to do it. First you will need 2 X custom flanges fo rthe intake and supercharger exhaust. Thomas knight http://www.boosthead.com can fab them up for you pretty cheap. Next you will need to decide if you are going to use the magnetic clutch or have boost always on. I recommend a bosch bypass valve to recirculate the boost under idle as the supercharger will be forcing way too much air into the TB under idle and low RPM. Best mounting places are either in place of the ac compressor or above the alternator. The Mercedes eaton uses a 5 rib pulley so you either need to change your crank pulley and alternator/ac compressor pulley or simply have a v style pulley matched for the supercharger (you will lose the magnetic clutch however) Getting a belt to fit should be cake. Yoou will not need a BOV if you use a bypass valve. you can get some nice 1" in/out for VW's and SRT-4's that will work awesome. It really depends on the model eaton you are using as the latest gen have built in bypass valves but I doubt you are getting one of those. Another option is to use a large check valve about 2'5" in diameter, commonly used for plumbing. then you can have it pull air NA until the supercharger creates enough pressure to slam it shut. this will require that you recirc air back to the beginning of the eaton and have the check valve portion of the intake Tee'd into it.

you can do it either of these 2 ways. I used a BOV but its not required with a bypass valve. either way it will work. i love seeing bang up jobs of people doing stuff like this. Dont let anyone discourage you and keep us updated.

Hey man! Thanks for the tips! :)
Fortunately i've got the E36 M42 so i've got no problems with the pulley and belt.
I'll keep you posted. Right now i'm waiting for it to arrive. ;)

Great buy! You'll need to do custom brackets to hold and align the  supercharger to the pulleys, the other is pretty straightforward;)

I'm still trying to figure out if it's an M45 or an MP45.
I got it for 300 euros/440$.
Tag reads A 111 090 03 80, Eaton 18036 and there is another side tag that reads CAXXXXX (where x are numbers i don't remeber now).
Also i need to know the diameter of the crank pulley from the E200/C200. Anybody have an idea or should i just proceed to the merc forums?

Hi Vladii,
I had that fitted on my M44 a year ago, but now going to turbo :p

That supercharger is a M62. It's same internal capacity as DASC (1 liter), but is more compact. That pulley is electroactuated, if you look the connector there are two pins, one is ground and the other you can give it +12V under switch.
With that pulley I was seeing something under 7psi, so go ahead! Wich pulleys do you have on your m42? Serpentine or V-belt?

I have some notes:

1. do all possible to have the S/C aligned to the main belt, otherwise with another pulley only for it there will be other problems (like tensioner pulleys...)
2. delete from your mind the BOV, but take a BPV(bypass valve) Bosch from all VAG 1.8T or Porsche. Will cost minus and will not give problems with ECU
3. if you don't will move the trotthle valve at supercharger inlet, it will make a HUGE SCREAMING NOISE (I like these things, but that is simple too much, you'll scary people even at 1500 rpms  :) )
and I mean like this:
mine were exactly like first one, that as you can see, it has TB after the SC...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqghXB9Hn_4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vOIGPxIFQ8

4. be sure to send the right amount of fuel, so buy a wideband gauge and lambda like Innovate LC-1 ;)
5. buy more belts, because if it will not be perfectly aligned, they will come off and destroy all:rolleyes:
6. fit a intercooler, it will make a huge difference:D
7. you'll need a lot of time if you're DIYing, but you'll learn a lot
8. if you need help, ask in this thread!
9. you'll have a lot of torque from 1500rpm to revlimiter, if you floor it in 5th at 1000 revs it will go and go and go :)
10. I fitted it in four different positions, if only can find other pictures...
11. if you'll use a rrfpr, run fuel lines far away from belts... because if a belt spun, it will try to destroy all little hoses up and down its standard position...

after a year running NA, I miss it (and I should admit that I miss its sound too...), but I'm switching to turbo because car is a DD, so I wasn't able to align at 1/10mm the pulley with the others, and for me a DD must be 100% affidable.

Thanks a lot for clearing what model supercharger it is! I was in a real blur. :D
I will try to DIY it as much as i can, i hate giving someone money to do something i can do just as well. :)
My M42 is from a 08/94 E36, so no problems with the belt type.
What was your hp/Nm gain? What engine management did you use?
How do you know it's an M62?
Thanks for info! ;)

Does anyone have the performance map for the 3rd generation M62?

good luck with everything.

why would u need another management system? wont the original E36 do - like the use in the DASC kits?

http://www.capa.com.au/eaton_m62data.htm

here there is the graph, save it and zoom with a picture editor...
;)

FYI I had a RRFPR...

It's a M62, the M45 on benz is totally different, and that one with that clutch is the M62. Tell me if you need another pulley with clutch :)
