you mean a transaxle, a lotus elise has one stock and it looks to me like a custom bell housing was made for it to attach to the s42

I thought it was a race only motor and that it was never put into a street car.

E28/34 M5 - S38
E30 M3 - S14
E36 M3 - S50/S52
E39 M5 - S62
E60 M5/6 - S85
E95 M3 - S65

I don't think I'm missing anything.

You aren't.

I thought the S42 was the Touring Car Championship motor for the 3 Series. That requires homologation. Anyone know what, when, where, etc. the homologation models were made and sold.

It did not. And it came in no production vehicles.

Supertourer regs were for specific series, eg DTM, BTCC, STW, TOCA. Here are the Supertourer Regs. I understand there are homologation papers for individual models, and the tech regs allow for the mods. I do not think the papers homologate 'hot bits' in the usual sense. For example, when BMW wanted to run the 4 door 318iS, there was an initial run of 2500 produced to homologate the 4 door sedan bodyshell with 16 valve engine. I think Boyracer in this forum has one of these.

I have no idea where the homologaton papers would be available from by the local associations such as the BTCC.

Reg 4.2.1 allows  teams to run the specially developed race engines, rather than soup up the base engine they shove out to customers. As we know, the BMW Supertourer race engine is the S42 which is based on the standard M42 engine in the 318iS. It is a BMW Motorsport only engine that was never offered in a production model unlike the S14 in the E30 M3. It is also why BMW was able to use the S14 in the E36 chassis.

Quote
Engine
4.2.1) The engine must be of the same make as the car and must be homologated by the FIA in Super Touring.
