We drive 17 year old bmws most of which cost $1000 or less. Still going strong on 87. I'll let you know when i blow it up.
The older a car gets the MORE it needs better gas.
17 years or 50 years, $1000 or $7000, does not matter, you still drive what was a high end luxury/sports car that requires better fuel.
As for a $1000 car, speak for yourself.
Mine would not sell for that and mine is not even in pristine shape.
My 97 318ti only required 89 octane. Not sure about the 95s, although I believe this is discussed at length on 318ti.org. My 91 318is requires 91 octane or higher, which is what it gets. This is a good instance to follow your owners manual.
1997 used an M44 engine with different cams, newer computer, knock sensors and such.

but why do they even make lower octane fuels?
Different engines like different grades of fuel. Just depends on whay the manufacturer wanter power and tuning-wise.
