You own a BMW, yet are too cheap to put the proper gas in it.
Worse, the price difference is usually no more than $1.40 per tank.

Why do you even want to risk it for a lousy $1.40?

With the amount of maintenance we do due to prior owners and just regular maintenance, this seems like VERY cheap insurance if nothing else.

i agree.
but why do they even make lower octane fuels?

We drive 17 year old bmws most of which cost $1000 or less. Still going strong on 87. I'll let you know when i blow it up.

The older a car gets the MORE it needs better gas.
17 years or 50 years, $1000 or $7000, does not matter, you still drive what was a high end luxury/sports car that requires better fuel.

As for a $1000 car, speak for yourself.
Mine would not sell for that and mine is not even in pristine shape.

My 97 318ti only required 89 octane. Not sure about the 95s, although I believe this is discussed at length on 318ti.org. My 91 318is requires 91 octane or higher, which is what it gets. This is a good instance to follow your owners manual.

1997 used an M44 engine with different cams, newer computer, knock sensors and such.

Different engines like different grades of fuel. Just depends on whay the manufacturer wanter power and tuning-wise.

Another thing about the $1.40, any of you guys doing this ever compare your mileage between both fuels??

You may be losing enough to where you are not actually saving any money at all. My old Celica was like that, I got 4mpg more per gallon with premium. In the end to travel the same distance with cheaper gas actually cost me 3% more than premium. I would not be surprised to see an e30 do the same since running 93 octane seems to make my car run better and more efficient.

The manual says 91, that is what I run.

I got better mpg with 91. High comp. motors need higher octane to burn more complete.
