Hey guys,
     So I am acquiring a lightened M20 flywheel (13lbs) from a machinist. I'm wondering if anyone else has put a lightened stock M20 on their M42.

My question is do I need the spacer ring from the M42 dual-mass if there is enough clearance? The machinist said he took a lot off the flywheel side that faces the engine/oil pan. My guess is I will not need the spacer.

If I do NOT need the spacer, will I still be using the factory M20 flywheel bolts? And I'm curious if the starter will have any problems engaging the ring gear?

Any help is appreciated, I just want to get this conversion done guys. Thanks!

I would first do a test fit to see if there will be any clearance issues.

You're going to need M20 flywheel bolts regardless...

You will need to swap the starter gear from an m20 INTO your m42.

I think as long as the big lip on the engine side is removed, you should be OK.

That's pretty much all I want to need to know I guess.

I was thinking that the spacer betw. the F/W and engine was supposed to space it properly so the starter engaged. My worry was that if I had NO spacer my starter would not engage.

And yes I am clear that the M20 starter pinion gear must be swapped into the M42 starter housing. Thanks Dude.

Another option is to just use the M20 starter.  I have a lightened M20 flywheel (no spacer) and M20 starter and it works great.  It also makes it much easier to rev match on the track, but took a while to make low speed or standing starts smooth without lighting up the tires.

I got mine machined and am not using a spacer. I have the m20 pinion gear in the OEM starter and have had no problems with the starter. The only problem I have is that my clutch isn't disengaging completely when its all the way in. It rubs just slightly making first a little harder to get into. I prolly just need to adjust the slave cylinder...

Could the clutch disengagement issues be from the TOB? That's my only guess.

Not sure, but this is why we have to use the euro TOB.

Well, mine does this with the stock FW and clutch. i probably need to bleed the system...

The only reason that I could see the engagement being different is if the clutch fork is at a different angle, but it shouldn't make much difference.

sorry for the old bump but up top i read the m20 starter will work fine if i dont use the spacer..  is this true? or do i swap everything out.. if i dont have to swap i wont.. my fly is getting cut down tomorrow so it should be on tomorrow night.
also the m20 TOB wont work or will it be fine.. i have both but if i can use the m20 TOB ill just return or sell the other

I just started my turbo M42 yesterday with a slightly lightened M20 FW with no spacer and M20 starter (use the later smaller starter, 88- I think..) and I also use the M42 TOB. Seems to be working fine while running it on the lift :)
