From what I've read, there are two skid plates that I think can be used with our cars. The custom 666 fabrication plate, and the OEM skid plate (Does anyone know for sure if this will fit?) I'm hoping someone may be able to shed some light on a few of my concerns.....
-How much does the OEM plate weigh? IIRC, 666's was going to weigh 3-4 lbs.
-How does the 666 aluminum hold up? Could it be easily damaged?
-Does the 666 plate cause any fluctuation in oil temps? I figure trapping all of that hot air up there can't be good. It doesn't look like this plate breathes very well.

there is another thread around here about skidplates, and iirc the OEM plate does not fit because the m42 oil pan is shaped differently than the m20.

Hmm. I was under the impression that the OEM one fit fine. Nonetheless, I have a 666 one on, and don't seem to have any problems with heat buildup. I can't speak to the durability - even with a skidplate, I try not to hit anything. :) It is pretty thick, but it is also only aluminum, so it's not going to take the full brunt of a manhole cover at speed.

any protection is better than none. any pics?

I found a few threads, but I think all I found was that someone had ordered the OEM one, I never heard anything about fitment or saw any pictures. I'm still curious about the heat buildup/durability of the 666 plate.

It is pretty durable - some serious damage avoided :-)

It is like that, becauce the car usually slides over a rock or anything.

Hot oil, right - after installing it You should put oilcooler there too...

Weight - about 6-8 kilos all.

Material: Alluminium PA11 6mm thickness.

The best would be PA6 5mm...

I've seen a e36 cross brace installed into a e30, should function like a skid pad + extra body rigidity

I've seen quite a few failed Raceskids plates but I haven't heard of any of the HIK/E30 Motorwerks plates failing.

Failed in what way? It looks overpriced but a little more protective than the factory option. Red46 looks like a good deal, hope it's quality. Maybe modifying plates (making oil-plug holes) sold for other bmws is the answer.

I have just seen 5-6 instances where somebody hit something and cracked their oil pan.  I haven't checked in the past year or two, but I imagine there are even more cases now.
Obviously these people came into contact with a stationary object, but if you just want protection from gravel and sticks it will be more than sufficient.

I drove over a dead raccoon yesterday...a really, really big raccoon. Made a hell of a noise as it bounced between the road and my floorboards. No damage noted.

If I'd had that stock BMW skid plate I would have skewered the coon.
