Author Topic: bavauto ignition coils HELP! (Read 7656 times)

I just bought a set of high performance ignition coils from bavarian auto. Does anyone have these already? I can't figure out how they are supposed to install. They have a spot where an ignition wire harness is supposed to plug and my ignition wires definitely don't have harnesses. Will I have to start cutting some rubber of of the stock boots? Also, they seem way to big to even fit in the spark plug area under the cover. The coils are rectangular and pretty big. They said when I ordered them that they will work for the 91 318is, but they only sent me instructions for 6 and 8-cylinder engines. What's the deal? Am I going to have to return these?

Got a pic? 'Cause I have no idea what you may be talking about... The ignition wires plug into the top of each coil, AND each coil has a connector at the bottom for the wiring harness to plug in to.

Do they look like the original coils at all? Why did you buy high performance coils, anyway?

nevermind man, i figured it out. the 318 coils are at the other end of the ignition wires beneath a plastic cover. i just had to pull the boots of the new coils and then replace the stock block of ignition coils. I just got back from a test drive and these things are awesome! $200 well spent! definite torque improvement in all rpm's, but most noticeable improvement was in he low end, which is where we need it the most.

Well, cool.

I just replaced my coils with stock coils, and noticed a bit of improvement at all RPM's and down low, too. At 180+k miles, mine were due to be replaced. I wonder how much of a measureable difference these make over the originals?

i'm not sure on the specs over stock coils, but my car has 167k and I'm sure that the coils I removed were the originals, so they were probably a little lacking. I figured if I need to replace I might as well upgrade, can't really go wrong that way. how much were stock replacements? the upgrades were a cool $200, but Bavauto always has awesome customer service and fast shipping so I knew i'd be satisfied. I wanted to upgrade ignition pretty bad anywyas, ut i heard that the 8mm wires were a waste of money and they cost the same as their coils, so i went for em.

I scored my coils along with a passel of parts for the timing chain replacement from a gentleman in North Carolina who sold his 318is - essentially the coils and all the parts for the timing chain (guides, chain, etc.) for like $300+. Couldn't tell you what they run, but probably not terribly much less than what you spent. Had I not gotten a smokin' deal on the package I would likely have gone with the performance parts.

I think the OEM bosch coils are around... $58 at bma.

(but, alas, I confess I sprung for the bav auto 'high performance' coils too... they're going to go great with my cone filter!)

embarrasing EDIT: the bosch coils are priced PER COIL, so that's $58 x 4 = bavauto is actually a decent deal.

I installed the BavAuto HP coils about a month ago too. I noticed the same improvements too. Well worth the $$.

Can someone explain how they slightly increase torque and hp? Also, do you just run the regular ignition wires in the car with this? Are there any other reviews out there?

i am running the stock wires w/ these basically b/c i heard that the bavauto hp wires were a waste of $200. Does anyone have the hp wires w/ the coils?

I definitely noticed smoother running once i installed the bavauto coils. the increase in performance could depend on the current state of your stock coils. i would take some pics, but my digital camera is workin right. there are pics on the website i think, worth a check.
