ducatipaso :: the '92 318ic
« on: May 23, 2007, 11:15:04 AM »
well, after getting tired of wading through all the turbo talk and other stuff that really doesn't apply to my car and modding style, I found this site thanks to someone on IRC... so here goes.

I've owned my '92 E30 318ic for 9 years. She was purchased used at Niello BMW in Sacramento where she was a trade-in. I sold my E28 535i 5-speed for her. She had 105,000 miles on her and now has 135,000 miles and is used primarily as a nice weather weekender.

Her engine and 5-speed driveline is all stock, and has been dead reliable. I've done a few OEM+ modifications:

* IS front and rear lips
* coupe trunklid
* USA plate filler
* euro grilles
* MTech I steering wheel
* OEM ashtray 'tray'
* H1/H4 Hella headlamps
* OEM M3 springs / Bilstein shocks
* Optima redtop battery
* BBS 15x7 et24 "euroweaves" that I had restored to as new condition by Skips Wheel Werks
* Bridgestone RE750 tyres

Most of the paint on the car is original, and the vinyl interior has held up great.

Enough of the blather, for TTIWWP :cool:

here's an up close shot of one of the wheels. I get a lot of questions on these, and I can't praise Skip's enough for his super high quality work

I'm also a BMW motorcycle fanatic, and am in the process of restoring my 3rd 'airhead'... this was an R80RT which is slowly morphing into a retro cafe-racer

I hope to use the M42 knowledge on this site to help me fix my idle 'hunting' problem that I've been having of late. I've heard that M42 E30 cabrios are rare [like 4,000 made in 1992 or whatnot]... does anyone have any production numbers?

Looks great! Yes, I think that 318 'verts are fairly rare-I've never seen one in person, anyway.

Love the bike, looks like a lot of fun. BMW bikes don't get enough attention, IMO, nor the credit they deserve.

Oh yea, welcome! ;)

thanks for all the props. hey Alpine, you got a spare pair of battery covers you want to sell? as part of my 'retro racer' look, I'd like some /5 chrome.

Unfortunately no. I'm still debating on whether to cut up my f/r fenders to complete my cafe racer look as well.

I unbolted my rear fender and relocated the taillight. There's a guy that sells a shorty fender on ebay in gelcoat for $75 it's nice looking and saves you the labour and distress of cutting up your oem item.

Nice cabrio.  My '91 was purchased new at Roseville BMW and I've owned it for the past 8 years (My father-in-law is the original owner).  Mine has also been very reliable and is about to crack 200k on the odo.

Here's my car's profile... http://m42club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=722

hey nice car. I think I've seen that car around. I moved to Portland only 1.5 years ago from Sacramento.

after reading your profile, I missed a couple of things... I have the same OEM seat covers (cotton duck... repels water great!) and embriodered mats that you do. Nice ride!

Yeah, I've seen that but was thinking of creating my own design. I'm also brainstorming on ideas for the rear taillight/turn signals.

Thanks, getting ready to retire it to weekends only (after driving it every day from Rancho Cordova to Elk Grove).  I'm checking out a '92 318i sedan this afternoon as a possible DD.
