Getting there man.  I like the manifold.
Hey I designed a mesh opening for the headlight opening.  It was a finer mesh.  Want a pic so you can see?  I used the head lamp ring.

I like what you did with the manifold. I think I'll try that while I have mine out. Thanks for the idea.

heatshield from lukasmotorsports.com

when youre painting the intake manifold, make sure you get all the cosmoline stuff off (that flaky yellowish gunk).  if you dont it will cause your paint to flake off easily.

I washed, sanded, degrease, sanded again and washed again before applying the first coat. I used high temp paint rated to 1400 degrees. I like this shade of black.

After prep

First coat of paint

Applied 3 more coats 30 minutes apart then carefully sanded the highlights. masked off the sanded area and painted again to cover up any scuff marks in the paint. The finished product.

What do you think? I might just pull the valve cover before the day is out.

The headlight opening is probably the best place to take in air on an E30. You could move your outside air temp sensor from the brake duct to check the actual temp. It's an easy HP and MPG gain.
I've painted the valve cover but have been just too lazy to pull the intake. I guess I could do several other things on the list like the Gordian knot of vacuum, coolant, etc. lines under there also. COSMOLINE, Aghhh!

tjts1 i like that shade too.  what color e30 do you got? you painted that piece pretty well.. looks damn near perfect.  mines was more of a quick 2 hour deal =P

d.clay when you paint your intake manifold you should also do the coolant bypass.. thats basically why i painted mines

My car is that same metallic black as D. Clay's signature but mine looks a lot worse. The whole paint process only took a couple of hours as well. I already had it out, saw your thread and thought why not give it a try. The paint is meant for BBQ grills so I guess its designed to blend well without a lot of prep. Works for me. Now my valve cover feels jealous.

I'm in San Rafael. Bought my car in the city.

For the electric fan, did you run it directly off the existing circuit for the auxiliary fan or did you use your own separate relays? My volvo 960 came with a very nice 2 speed 17" curved blade puller fan from the factory which I also adapted to my older volvo 240.  I think dimension wise it would be perfect for the BMW and it would be easy to integrate into the existing circuit. Did you remove the aux fan?

The fan in question as installed it on the 240. Its powerful enough to cool a 240hp 850R, extremely quiet and reliable. I tend to trust used factory fans over after market stuff. I also like it because it looks stock.
