Now with Pictures! Timing case and cyl. head questions
« on: April 30, 2007, 11:13:28 PM »
I'm going to be pulling the head on my m42 later this week to get it professionally inspected, pressure tested and resurfaced. Since to do that, I assume I need to remove the cams, valves and everything else -- what else should I do?

The car has ~176k on it...should I replace the hydraulic lifters, bolts, anything? It ticks a little when you first start it up (1/2 the time anyway) but as soon as the oil fills the lifters, the ticking goes away.

Thanks!
-Andrew

m44 valves, bit lighter, m50 lifters, hold a bit more oil, new double wound valve springs... enlarge the ports.... more aggressive cams, check yer cam gears

Don't have the money for new cams...however much I'd like them. Are the m44 valves, m50 lifters and double wound springs (where would I buy these?) all direct swaps? What should I look for on the cam gears? I've had the head off before and everything looked fine...

Thanks.

Also, in other posts, people mention using copious amounts of 'the right stuff' on the profile gasket to further seal/adhear it to the block/head.

I assume this: http://www.permatex.com/products/automotive/automotive_gasketing/gasket_makers/auto_Permatex_the_Right_Stuff_Gasket_Maker.htm is what they're talking about.

Is it better than: http://www.permatex.com/products/automotive/automotive_gasketing/anaerobic_gasket_makers/Permatex_Anaerobic_Gasket_Maker_b.htm ?

How much is enough? Do I want it squeezing out when reassembling?

--------------------

Are there any other gaskets, beyond the head and profile that I should think about replacing this time? Anywhere else water/oil flow that I might have a leak? I've done the waterpump, thermostat, etc...

Thanks,
Andrew

Are you asking if you have a problem based on the pics above? If so, no as 3 of the motors I've taken apart were all like that. That is how they come from the factory.

I haven't pulled down an M42 yet but after doing several S14s and M30s I always found that they would leak around this point unless tons of gasket goo was applied. I always get them matched now.

Just measure the difference with feeler guages and then when you get the head decked, get the extra taken off the top of the timing cover to match the head height when fitted.

I have never had a leak from this point on other engines since doing this.

Just my 2cents
