Caliper go bye bye from carrier...
« on: April 24, 2007, 02:13:47 PM »
So I got the car back from the shop yesterday.

Had the control Arms and lolli-pop bushings replaced. My plan for today was to go and get my rotors cut because the front were warped (brand new mind you).

I'm driving home after visiting a shop to get a quote for the rotors.

About to get of on my exit, and all of sudden I hit a bump and BOOM...the car starts pulling to the right really hard.

I pulled over to inspect.

Caliper was no longer attached to its mounting points and the caliper was rubbing the inside of the rim.

Once I got around to getting the rim of I was just SHOCKED. I will let the pics speak for themselves.

Oh and I'm of a brand new SS line...if anyone has A spare PM me!

I've had bolts loosen up and they make a clicking noise as the caliper hits on the bolts. They will stay in even if loose for quite a while. I agree with  what romkasponka says. No bolts at all.

hey denis

- that sux, glad you didn't die, get hurt, or cause (more) body damage to your car; you are still a big dweebus, but we would miss you...

- it totally sux about your wheel; this is one factor why I got the ronal LS rims vs say a totally mint set of BBS deep dish RZs... I could buy 5

- can you recap exactly what you did and had done to the front brakes... it may not be a coincidence that you have had a ton of stuff done to them... and noticed a weird problem right after you mounted the new rotors and pads

- really, let this be a lesson to all; if you tell your car you're planning on selling it, it gets pissed and tries to kill you...

count yerself lucky you didn't say you were going to part it out!

Jeez, that blows man....

Like Sam said, the fact you didn't get hurt is most important

Thank you man.

Well, I installed rotors and pads. Went for a test drive and noticed heavy vibration when braking.

I inspected the both sides (in front) to make sure none of the bolts were loose or over torqued. The problem still remained after all of this.

However I did notice that my balljoints were completely fucked, they were wobbling in their housings.

So two days ago, I had the control arms and lolli-pop bushings replaced. The vibration decreased significantly but was still there.

Today when I drove the car around, I heard the left front pad really rubbing against the disc, as well as a noise coming from the right every now and then.

I dismissed it because I felt it was the pad the rubbing on that side well...

Ultimately I blame myself, I just can't figure out what I could have overlooking when I double and triple checked!!

Probably the most disappointing thing is loosing the rim. Hopefully I can find another!! Or maybe two.. a bit optimistic!

I'm just going to hope for the best.

I installed the brakes and pads myself.

I was going to bring the rotors in today to get them cut because they were warped!

Jeez, warped rotors from the factory!!

where did you get those rotors from and what brand? if they are of oem type, they cannot be resurfaced.  bmw created theyre rotors so they cannot be turned, but made them cheap enough to simply replace em.

also, i highly doubt you left the bolts out, because you wouldve noticed one being loose right away.  who installed the control arms and bushings? they could have taken apart the suspension and brakes to instal the new control arms..

Yeah, I assume the major catostrophe had something to do with what was done at the shop?!?  I mean what are the odds of such a major failure after work was done where they very well could have taken off/messed with those parts some.

As for the warpage, it could have had something to do with how you broke in the pads/rotors as you described before?  Not trying to be a jerk, but BMW recommends a different break in procedure than the one you described in the other post.  Maybe there's a reason?? hehe  I can see why you did it the way you did though, some people swear by breaking in new rotors the way you did.  I was torn which way to go when I put my rotors on a couple of months ago, but I went with the BMW recommended break in procedure (slow and easy).  No problems here, and I have the same rotors from the same source (BMA).

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. With rare rims, it can be difficult in finding a spare. Good Luck.

Another thing I've seen happen is unproperly seated rotors. Sometimes with rust buildup and tight tolerances around the hub area, the rotor can seem like it's seated correctly when in fact it's not. The uneven area ends up rubbing on the brake pads all the time leading to premature warped rotors right away. Depending how badly they are not correctly seated, the pads can start smoking or the rotors glowing. If they aren't seated too badly, the symptoms might not be noticed right away or at all.

But in this case, it seems like a bolt came loose based on the inner wheel damage.

I never saw that before period! I never cut rotors, I just replace them. Keep us posted, glad nobody was hurt!
