definitely need 3rd gear to hit 100kmh with my 4.10 and standard redline.

i have located a diff cover for my new diff (3.91), so that will be going in soon.

what i am trying to do is get a hold of a G-Tech through a mates work, and i'd like to reference some 0-100k times with both the 4.10 and the 3.91.

I will keep you guys posted.

3.91 diffs came in the manual e30 318i. As far as locating one, go to your local pick-a-part/junk yard and you should be able to locate one easily. 318i's(not "is" but i's plural) are a dime a dozen. Keep in mind that the 4.10 is a closer ratio and will give you better access the top end power at higher speed. The 3.91 gives you better 0-60 acceleration, though. This is because one shifts into 3rd at 60mph (59.5ish if you will) when using the 3.91 As opposed to the 4.10, where one has to shift before 60, killing acceleration time. Also, I love the 3.91 because one gets better gas mileage, as well as a quiter ride while cruising on the freeway(due to lower revs). Let's not forget a "theoretcaly" higher top speed. :p

Wait.. I have a 91 318i.  I was pretty sure I had a 4.10 rear end though..  What year are you talking about?  I get around around 30+ mpg already.  I guess the only way to check is try to scream 2nd out to 60 today.

Really. You are the first person I've ever heard do this.

Interesting. You got a MarkD chip right? You should time it and see how you do.

225/50/15 tires with a Mark D chip.  Taller tires and 7100 limit are what does the trick.

Minkee--Sorry, I should have been a little more explicit. I was referring to the older m10 powered 318i. As far as gas mileage, try close to 40mpg freeway;) . I get 30mpg cruising around 80mph.

2002maniac--Hmmm...the diameter of your wheel/tire combo is not much different from mine, but the circumference is. I guess that's the key here, huh.

Specification  Sidewall  Radius  Diameter  Circumference  Revs/Mile  Difference
195/60-14         4.6in  11.6in    23.2in         72.9in        869        0.0%
225/50-15         4.4in  11.9in    23.9in         75.0in        845        2.8%

Hey, did you guys end up doing the rota group buy? I think grids look uber hot on e30's. I'm really contemplating on getting some 16'' in gunmetal. Probably not making it for the group buy though.

NOTE: Ahhhh, i just realized what you meant. you can hit 60 with a 4.10 because you have a chip. Yeah, of course. I was just referring to the stock redline and 4.10.

Hrm. I've been thinking about a chip lately. Read an article in GRM that the stock chip was running the engine on the lean side, and then after putting in the chip they bought, it was closer to prefered ratios. But the damn thing was too expensive.

How much did you pay for yours? What was the ebay sale title (so I can find another one on ebay)?

thanx

Close to nothing!!:D The seller's name is sapporo10. Very good communication and awesome chip. I won't tell you the price. Look it up and be amazed at how inexpensive his chips are. Very good deal. Keep in mind that a lot of the ebay chips are replicas/spin-offs of the popular name brand ones out there.

i tried to hit 60 in 2nd gear w/ my TMS chip the other day and got to about 58 at 6900rpm and shifted. i could maybe sqeeze in 60mph but it would be very close and i would have to shift right on the money. im drifting towards the 3.91 diff swap idea, but i love autox and i'm afraid i won't like the lower diff staying in 3rd gear.

It's easy with the programming tool to copy another chip. It's a lot easier than doing research. Of course there's that "intellectual property" thing. It's like the joke:
Q: How many copies of Windows did Bill Gates sell in China.
A: Two - the second guy didn't know the first one already had it!

jfdublyu--Interesting. I guess I'll keep my 3.91 for the daily haul and swap in the 4.10 for autocross/track days. I'm still waiting for a response from the dude selling his 4.27. I guess you eitherhave to go really close, 4.27; less than the 4.10, 3.91, in order to get good 0-60 times. But, the closer the gearing is definitely better for autox/track.

D.clay--Funny, due to that, an agreement was reached recently that several Chinese companies will install windows software from the factory like they do here.

I bought one of the Pro Formance chips off ebay last week and it arrived last night; I'm in Aus and because I never bothered to set up a PayPal account I got my mate to buy it for me cos he had.  After it arrived he calls me up and tells me not to worry about paying him cos he was giving to me as a birthday present.  Jezza: 1, World: 0.

So I go over his place and the we had the chip in and the car running in under 20 mins.  Jezza: 2, World: 0.

I pulled out of his garage and IMMEDIATELY noticed it performed better in first.  Jezza: 3, World: 0.

I pulled out of his street onto a wide main road.  Every time I make this turn I swing out my rear end.  Today was no different however there was definately more power because doing the same sequence I always do and the change into second pushed the rear out further than it normally does.  Jezza: 4, World: 0.

Next set of lights I did a 3k dump to see how fast it got to 100km/h.  The shift from first to second was orgasmic.  Because the engines goes to 7k now the gearing means the shift into second leaves me right in the thick of the power band and the rear end was saying "hi, don't forget about me :P~~" in the change to second.  Also, I think it got to 100km/h in 2nd; if not, very close.  Jezza: 5, World: 0.

"Lets go teach some ricers a lesson" says my friend in the car.  I oblige, quite eagerly :)...

Victim 1:  Riced up new Toyota Corolla - 2nd gear rolling start.  Fairly convincing beat, but that was to be expected.
Victim 2:  Mitsubishi FTO - 2nd gear rolling start.  He had an initial lead but the extra high end power coupled with the extra 500rpm meant I ended up taking him.
Victim 3:  Skyline R32 GTS-4 - Set of ights.  I figured this guy would rip me a new one but I wanted to run him for the pure fun of it.  3.5k dump and I killed him off the line then he backed out!  He was boosting like it was on sale for $1 but just didnt get off the line.  At the next set of lights he winds down his window and asks me if I have a turbo !  Jezza: 6, World: -1.

So to sum up, the chip increased the rev limit so I don't have to change as early and when I do I shift into ~4.5k, seems to have increased torque and theres a marked difference above 5.5k.  Plus maybe I can squeeze 100km/h out of second.

All in all; best birthday present ever!  I whole-heartedly endorse this product and/or service!

is there any evidence of a pro formance chip doing anything bad to the engine?  if not, for the price of dinner and a movie oyu can get a decent chip... not bad.

speaking of boost and 0-60 times, small engines can rock.  my wrx is 2 liters and i can get 60 in 4.8ish.

so ha there been any evidence of detrimental effects on the egine with these pro formance chips? like anything reported on quality control as far as bad ones or anything?  because from what i hear, they seem like a decent chip, especially for the price of dinner and a movie.
