Pro Formance chip installed!!! VIDS, VIDS, VIDS
« on: April 04, 2006, 01:14:18 PM »
Alright, so yesterday on a damp Norcal day, I went ahead and installed my "fleebay" chip as some call them. Before I installed it though, I went ahead and did some 0-60 runs to see if that would be affected.

NOTE: Both in-car shots are with a 140lb friend holding the camera

STOCK CHIP:
To my amazement, with the STOCK chip, I was consistently doing 7.2ish-7.7ish runs. My car is fairly stock, with the exception of the 3.91 diff and maganflow catback. I believe the 3.91 really helped the 0-60 time because I shift into 3rd at 60, w/stock chip, instead of 52ish? with a 4.10. Ok, so now the good stuff. In  this particular vid, the road was beginning to dry up and I shifted exactly at 6500rpm(right at the rev limit). You will see that at 7.5 secs I'm doing 60:

In the following vid, if one begins time from my launch till I shift, approx 7 secs:

AND NOW CHIPPED:

First of all, I would like to say that this chip is AWESOME! Rev limit is now at 7000, as expected. But the difference in pull from 4k is VERY noticeable. The car idles SOOOO smooth. It idled fine before, but now it's crazy smooth. The first thing I noticed was how the over all responsiveness of the car improved . It feels much, for lack of a different word, smoother. Also, I noticed a very interesting thing. At idle, "normal" driving, and freeway cruising, the car is very quiet. My magnaflow was relatively loud, but now has mellowed out. But, under WOT, it's much throatier and sounds fantastic!

Alright, now for the "after" vid. Unfortunately, the rain came. And boy did it come. When I shot this vid it was raining lighty and I could no longer launch at 3000ish for obvious reasons. As you can see, I launched at a measly 2k. BUT...I still managed to do 60 in 7 seconds. Yes, and in very wet conditions. So, I'm expecting at least a second off my 0-60 in ideal conditions! I hit 60 at around 6800rpm (maybe 6700,I can't really tell):

PS I hope the vids work. They were giving me problems earlier. If they don't please let me know of another place that can host them for me (us ;)). Cheers.

So what you're saying is that you're doing that quick of runs without a lightened flywheel?

Well I'm certainly suprised.  Makes me honestly consider getting a new rear end.  Now I wonder what the runs would be like with a new flywheel and a new rear with a chip and exhaust.  I imagine you could duck into high 14s in the quarter or maybe low 15s.

Isn't it wild? I was thinking with a flywheel, I'll be doing high 5's very low 6's (0-60)!!!

Here's my mod list (performance oriented):

Magnaflow catback exhaust
3.91 Diff
IInd Gen Pro Formance chip
and for shits and giggles, I removed the plastic panel that covers the back of the driver's side headlight assembly.<----Little bit of ram air:p

so a 3.91 rear end will improve accelaration? wouldn't a 4.27 be quicker?

i always get confused with these ratio's

I think he's saying that with a stock redline, you cant hit 60mph in 2nd gear unless you change the gearing.  A shift to 3rd slows you down.

I am not saying that's the way to go, I am saying there's no way to simply get the car to do those hopeful 0-60 times with this intended mods :)

I think the M42 can be made to be very powerfull with boost,
I mean subarus in 2.0 trim are running upwards of 800hp these days

^^^^Exactly.

e9nine--I know it sounds rather optimistic, but considering Gunni's car is doing similar times to my car with nothing but a lightened flywheel, I imagine I can at the very least shave 1/2 a second off. Who knows, I'll definitely share my results when I "slap one on there."

Gunni--Yeah, as far as potential goes, I believe we've got something going with our engines, but not many people have gone beyond a S/C on our cars.

Vids work OK for y'all?

If you don't mind me asking, where did you pick up a 3.91 from and were there any fitment problems?  I heard you can do the swap in about an hour if you got the right tools.

I would love to get pointed in the right direction on this.  What models came with a 3.91?

3.91 diffs came in the manual e30 318i. As far as locating one, go to your local pick-a-part/junk yard and you should be able to locate one easily. 318i's(not "is" but i's plural) are a dime a dozen. Keep in mind that the 4.10 is a closer ratio and will give you better access the top end power at higher speed. The 3.91 gives you better 0-60 acceleration, though. This is because one shifts into 3rd at 60mph (59.5ish if you will) when using the 3.91 As opposed to the 4.10, where one has to shift before 60, killing acceleration time. Also, I love the 3.91 because one gets better gas mileage, as well as a quiter ride while cruising on the freeway(due to lower revs). Let's not forget a "theoretcaly" higher top speed. :p

Really. You are the first person I've ever heard do this. This is from BP's site:

Quote
A quick retest (at night though, so no video pics) with the Superchip installed has indicated that, with a good start, a run in the low-to-mid 8's is possible. Click here for the sound file link. Pause the file at the gear changes which were at 6500rpm. 2nd equates to slightly under 55mph in ~6.5 seconds and 3rd equates to ~83mph in ~12.5seconds (true values). I would approximate 60mph to come up in a little over 8 seconds.

Interesting. You got a MarkD chip right? You should time it and see how you do.
