Montoya finished 5th. at today on the big oval. It looks like he's picking up on the aerodynamics of sedans pretty quick. No doubt he has talent but NASCAR is a world unto itself. If he does a little better it will be interesting to see who he has for drafting partners. After a bit of questionable bumping that put Pruett out of the Busch race in Mexico City, he has redeemed himself a bit with today's run.
Question: How long before he wins in NASCAR and do you think he will ever win a championship?

Personally... It woud not be possible for me to care less.  Ever since he made the jump to the "Special Olympics of Motorsport" he's been off MY radar.  Opinion only, folks, spare me your flames.

I think he'll get a win this year possibly, but for sure I'd think he could pull one off next year, but personally I can't see him getting a championship. I think there are too many racers who have been doing this so much longer and have more experience to be able to get a championship.

Only one driver has won the Indy 500, Daytona 500, and the F1 Championship - Mario Andretti. Montoya does not have the F1 championship. Andretti's F1 record is belittled by some as being due to the technological superiority of Lotus. Somebody said once that a monkey could have won in that car.
There has been an on-going debate for decades about the relative skill levels of drivers from different series, etc. Motoya being dominant in NASCAR would put that debate in a whole new light.  Andretti's record speaks for itself.  He went from Mid-West dirt tracks to the F1 Championship winning Daytona and Indy along the way.
Montoya's biggest hurdle is no top tier NASCAR teammate. I think he'll win races with Ganassi and the championship when he moves to team with a top five team mate or Ganassi gets one. That will give F1 more of a boost in the US than it will NASCAR in the world. Why? Those good old boys have seen one of their own kick F1 ass.

Will they let him win...
« Reply #4 on: March 19, 2007, 07:12:57 PM »
...is the question.  In NASCAR's WWF-Marketing-Drives-the-Train approach, Montoya is good for drawing in Hispanic fans and building interest in Mexico and beyond.

He is surpremely talented, but NASCAR is a different beast.  My guess is they will allow him to do moderately well to build interest but aren't too keen on him winning any championships or too many races. The good ol' boys aren't gonna let no foreigner actually win a title.  If he ever has a lead late in a race, look for the famous "debris on the race track" phantom yellow flag -- NASCAR's speciality.

There's a famous story about Wally Dallenbach, a road racing expert, who had a HUGE lead at a Watkins Glen or Sears Point -- I mean, like long gone, way beyond bumpin' range.   If the race had gone green to the checkered a road racin', Trans-Am interloper would have won the day.  Think NASCAR let that happen?   No freakin' way.  Out comes the oil-on-the-track yellow, and the nerf him out of the way on the restart.  That's NASCAR.

So...as a resident of Finland, can you appreciate that my 14-year old daughter is named Mika?  Somehow I got that by my spousal unit:D

I always thought it ironic that Fittipaldi and Piquet's first names were Emerson and Nelson. A real problem for a patriotic Brazilian.

My favorite E. Fittipaldi quote:  (spoken with a halting, heavey Brazilian accent)  "Everyone feels the car on their ass a different way."

RP-(et al)
of course NASCAR is a redneck circus.  I've grown up with it.  I'm hoping Montoya wipes 'em clean, and I thnk it is possible he will, despite -or maybe as part of- the show.   There is a surprising amount of engineering expertise in there now.  Even the drivers sometimes forget to act like idiots and reveal the hidden inteligence during an interview.  I've actually started watching since he came on board.  Now if the marketers would figure that out.

Ya...I grew up 1/2 hr south of the Indiapolis Motor Speedway.  My dad was a 35-year employee of Cummins Engine Co., and they annually sponsored an Indy car.  Every year, my dad would entertain European clients at the race and took me along.  I have attended since 1965 (Jim Clark won that one BTW,) as a result I've always had my socks knocked off by open-wheel cars.

I love how he pissed Tony Stewart off Sunday. He was keeping Montoya from advancing in the field for a few laps, so he gave him a little love tap as he passed, and Stewart couldn't handle it. Best part was after the race, seeing Stewart pissed and Montoya didn't even care to think about it.

Indeed...my home town is Columbus IN, and all the signs entering the city USED to say "State Gymnastics High School Capital of the World" for apparently obvious reasons.  New signs were implemented that now read "Birth place of Tony Stewart."  Yawn.

I suppose Montoya was a big disapointment in F1. Not sure does he make any good for Nascar either.
Mario Andretti is still remebered also here in Europe as a great racing driver, i suppose he would made it also with some other car. Of course Lotus was # 1 car back then.
I hope we will get soon a good F1 driver from USA, that would raise popularity of F1 in the USA. Nascar is for you americans only, we can see it quite little on our TV channels. F1 and WRC are what we mostly watch, it's quite amazing how good drivers we have in bothc series if we look how few Finns there are, just a little bit over 5 million. We have currently 2½ F1 drivers, Räikkönen, Kovalainen and Rosberg, whos dad is a 1982 F1 champion Keke Rosberg. Rosberg jr's mother is german and he drives under german licenese altough he have a finnish passport.

I was reading the news today and noticed that Jacques Villaneuve was pulled out of his Toyota ride with Bill Bavis Racing after failing to qualify. Reason given was his lack of sponsorship money to throw in the deal.
The part I missed before was that he is also a former F1 Champion and Indy 500 winner.  He is the only driver that has two of the three F1/Indy/Daytona wins and may join Andretti in a club of two.
Also noted that Tony Stewart is the only driver to win all three series in the USAC Silver Crown.  If you remember USAC, you are definitely old!
I was totally baffled by how you could currently have two and a half F1 drivers until I realized it related to nationality.
