pretty much spot on. thats interesting about the 90mm stroke though, good find. link isn't working for me though...

However, further comparison on ETK 2007 between the 90mm stroke crankshaft of E46 318d M47N (BMW p/n 11217790928) and the 88mm stroke crankshaft of E36 318d M47 (BMW p/n 11212247515) shows the difference in guide bearing shell and bearing shell used on the crankshaft (different BMW part number).
The guide bearing shell and bearing shell used on the crankshaft of E36 318d M47 and M42, M43, M44, M50 and M52 engines are all similar
So this is inline with the reference guide from Mike Kowalski in the beginning of this thread.
In other words, the 88mm crankshaft of 318d M47 seems the best fit to use as a stroker crank on M42 M44 engine.

Or, can a little bit machining on the block will accommodate 90mm stroke crankshaft of E46 318d M47N ?? Any idea?

Does anyone know that the engine was also fitted to the Rover 75 (UK Brand) and is engine code M47R. I am trying to get more information, anyone know if it is usable?

Reading wiki they say that the Land Rover Freelander TD4 model has a m47 engine in it. Would have to be the early years of the Freelander. However Im pretty sure we have those in north america. So could this be a way of getting this crank?

I'm looking into a m42 stroker, found this m47r crank, does someone know if it will fit?
Its from a Rover 75 2litre 2002 16v Type D4D M47R

as comparison:
Here is the M42 left, M44 middle, M47 right.

It looks like the nose is to short like a m47n, someone can confirm this?

does anyone have any better information as far as which Freelanders and which Rover 75s the crank we need came out of? I can't find any specific info on what engine those two cars had, whether it was the m47d or the m47n. also, some people are selling m47r crankshafts. since getting one of these crankshafts involves overseas shipping of a very heavy part, i really don't want to pay to have one shipped only to find it's the wrong one (and therefore completely useless because the m47 was never offered here so I would never be able to resell it).

I wish I knew. I'd love to stroke the M42 & add a few goodies, but I've never found the correct info. I'd get them to take a lot of pictures...

Hey Guys, I'm also interested in built a 2.1l M42. But I'm confused which crank is the right way and what exactly has to be machined.

M47D18 or D20?

Just give me some infos, a friend of mine could do the job here in Germany.

If i tell him what to do exactly what to do on which crank he can give me a price.

To bore the block up to 86.5mm for example he's asking 200� (one block)

I will try to arrange some cheap cranks, but need to know which one is the best.

The correct crank is m47d20 with 88 mm stroke, I believe that m47d18 uses the same crank.

The incorrect cranks are m47tud20, m47tu2d20, and m47r as they have a short snout and require a fair amount of work to lengthen. But doable and they have a stroke of 90 mm.

You can spot the difference easily by the fact that the incorrect cranks have a short snout and a large timing wheel just in front of where the flywheel bolts on.

The crank pulley bolt and washer for the M47 is a euro market only. Stock is a M18x1.5x102 bolt. A readily available alternative is the N20 crank pulley bolt which is M18x1.5x108mm. The parts list do not list any dimensions of any of the washers. For the Australian market at least, the E90 320D M47N2 washer is a possible option. Part numbers highlighted below in red.

The bolt and washer is with the engine builder and if there are any issues with them, I update. Part numbers and specs are:
