I'm pretty much done w/ the research and the turbo will be on shortly.

When I first bought my 318is I didn't know what I wanted to do about the whole engine thing. I thought about the x50 swap but I decided that that would compromise the "feel" of the 318is. Sooo I decided to go FI. The M42 is a VERY under-rated engine by fellow bmw people as you prob know.

Well enough of the background here are some of my parts:
I sold the t3 for a gt28rs. I figured dual BB and ceramic blades, why not.

Next is the FMIC:

very interested to see this progress. keep us updated and good luck.

what is the front mount off?

i have just found out that i have a pre-fabbed m42/t28 intake manifold available to me, so once again, i am considering the turbo route. However, where i live it is very illegal and as such would void any insurance policies. so yeah, we will see.

You are using a FMU...is that a manifold pressure controlled fuel unit?  While it will work for low boost apps, I HIGHLY suggest going stand-alone.  I ran MegaSquirt on my 1st 318iS, and have yet to get around to it on this one.  Awesome project though.   Keep us posted!!!

yeah the FMU is a mechanical fuel booster.  For low psi apps it is more than enough so thats why I am using it till I go to higher psi's.  I will get some pics of the FMU when I get back to school next week.

Alot of people plan turbo projects, even buy parts.  Sadly those that complete the project are few.

Prove me wrong bitch!  I want to see it!

gladly, I know tons of people do that but I am going to do mine for sure.  I love the 318is it just needs a little more power, ya know.

Looking forward to seeing this.... I have plans to turbo my 318is, and believe it can make a nice amount of power, but it has 140k probably hard driven miles on it. This would be my 5th turbo'd car if i do it :)

Anyone have any links of other turbo'd m42's? Im interested to know in the power/reliability of it. I think i would be dissapointed if saw anything less than 200whp.

Are you planning on lowering compression or touching the motor in any way? Give me some more details, im interested in how you are going about doing this.

And good luck :)

If you build it right, it will be reliable. If you drive it like a maniac it will disintegrate. If you half ass shiet, you could end your smiling parade very soon. MOst important of all, if you get cocky with the newfound power, you can hurt yourself. Just be safe, plan and do it up!!
I haven't built a turbo myself nor owned one but I have driven, ridden, seen many. Either high compression, low boost or lower compression and go with higher boost. I have no experience and all my ideas are just what I have read and not tried so you're better off not listening to me.

hey guys i am also looking at goin down the turbo route but so far all the ppl i've asked give me funny looks wen i tell them the m42's compression ratio.. so asubimmer r u gonna give it low boost with stock compression or lower the compression then high boost? if you do low boost with stock compression i promise i will turbo my m42 by the end of this summer:)  of cousre i will prolly use all the same parts as your set-up as well if urs goes sucessfull...good luck man!!:D
