My used Motronic w/JC chip (supposedly) came in the mail yesterday. I found it on bf.c classifieds for $60 plus shipping. The guy had a '91 318is that was rear ended and subsequently totalled/parted out.

I've never seen a JC chip and I can't find a pic of a JC chip anywhere. I was wondering if anyone has a pic or can describe it. There is no lettering at all on this chip. I didn't pop it out of the unit, just opened it up. I took a pic and can post it but it's not the greatest.

I just wanted to see if I got hosed because the guy advertised it as above.

Mine just has a sticker with "Turner Motorsport" and the application.

Yeah this one is black with a chrome sticker covering ~ 3/4 of the back of the chip. There is nothing on the sticker though.

That is kind of the way that I was thinking. Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

I guess I'll have to do the butt dyno tomorrow. My car may be already chipped because it revs to 7k or so. I never checked into this yet. Can the m42 rev that high with stock chip? I'm a total noob getting into this area but thats how we learn.

Sounds like you may have been duped. Even if it is not a genuine chip, it should still be an upgrade from stock. However, it sounds like you are already chipped judging from the 7k redline.

no the stock chip wont let you go to 7.
burned chips don't matter, if it works it will be as good as the real thing. the only problem is some times the burns don't work, so the engine wont work. To answere your question its not a good or bad thing, but the price was 60$ so it was a good thing in that regard, otherwise it doesn't matter.

what does the chip in your car read?

^^^^Right. Stock chip has the rev limit at 6500rpm--I've hit it several times(Doh!). This will be going away soon, I hope. Just bought a IInd Gen Pro Formance chip today. Should be here in a few days!!

I think that I may have been jobbed. I swapped Motronics today and the only difference may be some low end torque according to the butt dyno. Still revs to 7k but doesn't pull any better. If this was a real JC chip and I dropped $250 on it I'd be pissed.

Anyhow, I decided to open up my Motronic to check it out and it appeared to have never been open. The tabs were as tight as new and the chip looked stock.

This must be a Fleabay chip. Oh well live and learn. At least I have a backup brain box.

M42fan, if we ever hook up I want a ride to feel the real deal.

Haha, you're on, although it still isn't terribly impressive. Of course, I've spent the last ten years driving 5.0 mustangs and LT1 Impalas. The 318 is still more fun to drive, just doesn't have that V8 grunt.

I've driven a few 5.0s too and they're only fast in a straight line, if you can keep them going straight that is. I'll take my m42 any day. My in-laws are all Ford people too and can't really appreciate the BMW quality, reliability, durability and handling.

That's prety much what I was trying to say. The 318 is a much more balanced car than either the Impala or the Mustang ever were. I'm definately a convert!

My ebay chip supposedly was a Schnitzer (?). I think they are a for real company. It did come with detailed instructions in un-translated english. I believe it had an alpha-numeric code stamped in white on it. My butt-dyno certainly feels a push at about 4k that was not there before. I haven't even wound this car out to the redline though. My other car is a low-low redline with no over-rev protection so I can't help but shift early. Is ther possible damage going to 7K? What about a little beyond?- since this is an ebay chip it may not even shut me down at 7K....

You sould be fine to 7000. There's another thread that's been active within the last day or so that goes into the problems with going much past that. Mostly related to the vibration damper, also some problems with valve float iirc.
