little screws for the butterflies in the TB
« on: November 15, 2013, 07:32:27 PM »
Disassembled the TB completely to do a refresh. Looking at the little screws on the butterflies (that hold them to the shafts), they almost look to be mildly mushroomed at the base of the thread (essentially, a lock-screw). When removing, looks as if the last thread on the screw pretty much just shaved itself out (these things are TIGHT).

I don't see those screws shown anywhere on RealOEM or elsewhere as a standalone part. Any advice on putting them back in/replacing them? At this point it looks like I'll just chamfer the edge a bit and use some red loctite, but would obviously like to "do it like the factory" if possible.

I think uour best bet is to reuse the screws and use loctite. They aren't intended to be disassembled from the factory point of view.

A lot of times its a really fine thread pitch too so no normal fasteners work as replacement!

They're staked to prevent them falling down the intake. I'd probably reuse mine with some Loctite red, since they don't get very warm.

I'd suspect you could order them from a supplier like Grainger, but I'm not sure of size. I'd bet they're a common metric size.

Dave, the BMW ones might be a common size but I know VW and Porsche are not a common size. I assume BMW would be similar.

Your best bet is to reuse the fastenets!

I could be dead wrong on this account but those screws are installed and staked as they are not a serviced item. Your best bet and (safest) path of least resistance is another complete throttle body. And leave the screws alone on the next one.
