Firewall Liner Delete?
« on: November 10, 2013, 08:37:33 AM »
Doing a complete resto of my 1991 318iS and I want to know if anyone has permanently removed the thick "rubber" liner on the firewall... If you have removed it any heat or noise issues?? It kinda looks like sh*t and I would like it gone....

I haven't done it, but it's tempted me once or twice.  The stuff is peeling off my '84 E23 and I'd like to have it gone.

I've removed some of the liner towards the back, It was sagging down and melting to my transmission. I can hear more engine noise but that could also be the single mass flywheel conversion. I'm very tempted to remove it all, it's in very bad condition but I'm worried about cabin heat as I don't have A/C.

I believe you can still buy this liner at a moderate price. You could always remove it and if you're unhappy order a new liner. If you go that route let us know how it works out.

Well I have removed it - pretty easy, considering my resto... It will be a couple of years before I know if it was a good decision though!

Unless it is falling off or something, I would leave it. It probably only adds 15lbs and helps keep the ride quiet.
