Mess under the intake: hose lengths
« on: September 09, 2013, 01:30:21 PM »
I'm about to tackle the mess under my intake but want to make sure I have enough hose, my e30 is my daily driver so it would suck if I didn't have enough and had to bus around to find more hose.

Any idea on lengths for these hoses?

5/8” Coolant Hose?
5/16” Fuel Hose?
19/32” Vacuum Hose?

I'd advise using metric hose and buying the OEM BMW (or adequate aftermarket parts) for the pre-bent hoses, along with new gaskets.  Be sure you get an OEM BMW coolant neck and a few spare bleeder screws as well.  I love to save money, but IMHO BMW parts are a requirement.

I'm unsure of lengths, I always buy more than I need.  I'd also urge you to replace the five 8x13mm fuel hoses at the same time.  Ditto on the OEM - BMW high pressure fuel hose and the stock 'Norma" stainless hose clamps are far superior to the generic parts and not much more expensive.

All of this hose is sold by the foot at most AutoZone, CRAP, Checker, NAPA or CarQuest. See below, its cheap and will cost about $1 foot so get extra. Take pictures and go slow.

•   5/8” Coolant Hose - sold by the foot (Get 2 Feet) you may need a 90 degree coupler for the custom bypass.
•   5/16” Fuel Hose (Make sure it is fuel INJECTION hose, not fuel hose for a carb) - Sold by the foot (get 3+ feet)
•   19/32” Vacuum Hose sold by the foot (get 2-3 feet)

Taking pictures is a must. I somehow managed to mix up the fuel lines and the heater core hoses. LOL

• To bypass the throttle body heater I would highly recommend using this hose from BMW, it fits perfect once you cut it to length. PN is 11531247398
• Might as well get 10 feet of fuel injector hose while you're at the store, it's likely the line from your pump to the fuel filter is in equal condition to the lines under the hood.
• 19/32 or 15mm vacuum hose is hard to find, If you buy 1/2 inch then make sure it allows enough stretch to fit over the 15mm fittings on your valve cover and ICV.

I second the new cooling/heater hose for the bypass being the BMW part # 11531247398.   It just looks better than plain old heater hose from Amazon like I did.  Otherwise, I think I used maybe 10inches of heater hose, 8 inches of fuel line (4in - 2 of them) and since I did the fuel filter lines as well behind the drivers seat,  under the car.... that was another 12inches or so.  I still have plenty of fuel line left when I purchased this from pelican parts:

Thanks fellas, big help!

I finisher her up... I will say one thing though for anyone who may be reading this, like the fellas in this thread suggest grab part number 11531247398 for the bypass. I went against advice and re-used some hose and it ended up splitting and I had to take everything apart again and get that part anyway so save yourself a headache and don't take shortcuts.
