Correct Motor Mount for M42 (318ti)
« on: August 11, 2013, 09:15:49 PM »
When I was checking my engine ground wire tonight (it's good), I noticed my passenger motor mount was split.  Not only separated but a 1/2" thick circle of rubber had actually rotated out of the mount.  Probably not safe to drive it like that, so no problem, as I have already bought a low mileage take-off mounts for "an M42".

Went to reassemble, and noticed an obvious issue.

The ones coming off my car (no idea if they are right or wrong):
Passenger side - Stud (off-set) and bump far apart
Drivers side - Stud (centered) and bump close together

The replacement ones
Identical - Stud (off-set) and bump far apart

I tried to re-install the passenger side, but it appears like the hole for the  stud and the hole for the bump are too close together for the far apart variety of motor mounts.  With the stud off-set, it will also not rotate in enough without hitting the frame rail.  Same issue on the drivers side.

See pictures below.  I need to get a set on order tomorrow morning, so they will be here by the weekend.

What am I missing?

Thanks!

Glenn

Both mounts should be the same according to RealOEM. The BMW PN is 11811141377. So, order 2 of those. Maybe someone jammed in an E30 mount (they are different than the E36 ones).

Thanks. I noticed they were the same part on real OEM as well, so one of my existing ones was definitely not right.   Do you happen to know what the difference is between the two?  I would like to see if my replacement units are correct.  Do the correct M42 units have the bigger gap between the bottom stud and the button, and the bottom stud is offset from center.?

Just installed new engine mounts on my 91 318is. It makes a huge difference, can't believe I waited so long to change them.

Mine were nowhere near as bad as your passenger mount! It could be deformed badly because it was the wrong mount to begin with.

I can verify the e30 mounts have a short gap between the stud and the button on the bottom and the stud is offset on the top of the mount.

Looked at some more photos. It does look like previous owner used an E30 mount on the passenger side. Not shocking given the quality of some of the other repairs I am now correcting. The good news is that I think my replacements are correct.

Now I need to figure out the correct orientation of the mounts as I don't have a good go-by.

Does anyone recall what holes the mount stud and the locating pin are supposed to be in for each side?

Thanks!

I think that there are holes/slots in the subframe tabs that the mount nubs fit into. There should only be one way that the mounts fit properly.

I agree, they should only fit one way. I believe the locating pin hole in the subframe is a smaller diameter?

Unfortunately I have not worked on an E36 based M42 car so I don't have the best answer.

www.318ti.org probably can help better in this case.
