awful noise!!!
« on: July 07, 2013, 11:52:17 PM »
So every time I start my car (and for as long as it gets driven thereafter) I have the most awful noise coming from my P/S pump. I don't know if there is something wrong with the pulley or whether the pump itself is broken. I don't even know if that's where the noise itself is coming from, but whenever I pop the bonnet to have a listen that seems to be where it's located.

Can anyone help? What is it and how do I fix it?

Cheers,

Jester

First, how old if your PS belt and how loose is it?

If it a loud groaning noise, then a simple fluid flush might be all that is needed.

Visit HERE for a plethora of 318iS stuff and some other randomness.  Would you say I have a, plethora, of pinatas?

I actually replaced the P/S, Alternator and Water pump pulleys not that long ago with the Underdrive Power Pulley set from VAC Motorsports and that came with a new belt. So it's not that old at all. It's also not loose at all because of the size of the pulleys. It's more of a high pitch noise...mainly occurs in 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear, not so much in 4th or 5th.

Is the noise apparent when your parked in neutral and slowly rev up the motor? If it's the PS pump then does it change or get louder when you turn the wheel, with or without the car moving? Engine noise can be a little hard to pinpoint sometimes. I've tried it helps to VERY CAREFULLY take wood or metal rod and put one end to my ear (not IN your ear but close to it) and the other end to various parts on the motor. This kind of helps to hear what's going on inside.

Hello, I just bought recently an e30 and have been replacing parts little by little. Its running and it seems im getting the same problem. 1,2,3 sounds the loudest. The higher the RPMs go, the louder it gets. Even on neutral reving the engine a little. Since im new to BMWs I dont know if its normal or not. Im guessing its not. 4,5 gears is not as bad. it sounds like a buzzing-ish noise. Kinda like if the car is supercharged. the sound does not get worse with movement of the steering wheel. (don't know if it would still be related to that or not). And dont know if this is the same noise you get but any help I can find here will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

No noise when the steering wheel is at full lock. I have already replaced the PS reservoir because of a leak that gave me this noise. It might be related to another pulley, but I definitely have sounds coming from my PS pulley. I have a short video that I took of the engine running at idle here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhjQatJ3wrs&feature=youtu.be

any help from this would be great.

That's a nasty/embarrassing squeak. I'm not too familiar with the serpentine belt on the newer m42's, maybe another member has run into this before and can give you better advise. It sounds like an idler pulley to me but you could try misting water on individual pulleys and seeing if it gets louder?

Maybe if you pop the covers off the idler and/or tensioner pully's then spray water on the bearing, see if any change. Small screw driver and they come right off.

I think I have found one of the problems.

That is my AC Compressor and its magnetic clutch...well, half of it. Beats me where the rest of it is! This was making a lot of noise, so I removed the belt and it's gone. The noticeable difference in throttle response is enjoyable, but I need AC when it get back to 30+ degree days here.

There is still a slight chirping sound coming from the other pulleys, but it goes away when sprayed with WD40
